Lilongwe, Malawi - In a gracious gesture to support maternal healthcare in the region, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated a new maternity structure to the Chilobwe Health Center in the Kabudula health area. The modern facility was officially inaugurated on Monday, June 3, 2024, in the presence of esteemed guests including Senior Chief Gogo Khongoni, Director of Health Services Dr. Wilson Ching’ani, the Lilongwe District Health Management Team, and the Kabudula Health Area Management Team.

Mr. Yohane, President of the Church, acknowledged the importance of holistic care, stating, “It is our objective to heal the people both physically and spiritually.”

Dr. Deborah Katete, the Health Area In-charge, shed light on the critical need for the new facility, noting, “A lot of women were delivering on their way to Kabudula Hospital or even at home because we did not have a maternity wing at Chilobwe. Now, our service provision is going to be enhanced.”

In his address, Dr. Ching’ani underscored the commitment of the government and the Lilongwe District Council to the advancement of universal health coverage and the expansion of essential health services. “We aim to have health services within a 5 km radius, and the Church is helping us realize that goal. What we have seen is Christianity in action,” he said. Dr. Ching’ani conveyed his deep appreciation to the Church administration for their contributions to the Lilongwe district and highlighted the Church’s support for other healthcare facilities in the area.

The joyful occasion was marked by traditional dances and performances, as the community celebrated the opening of the new maternity structure and emphasized the importance of caring for this vital healthcare resource.

EXCITING NEWS AS KABUDULA COMMUNITY HOSPITAL ACHIEVES 2-STAR RATING

In a moment of celebration and pride, Kabudula Community Hospital has achieved a significant milestone today as it received a 2-star rating from the Quality Management Directorate. This recognition comes as a testament to the hospital's unwavering commitment to quality improvement and marks a remarkable turnaround from its previous status.

The hospital, located in the heart of Kabudula, has long been dedicated to providing exemplary healthcare services to its community. However, it had been earmarked as one of the underperforming facilities in terms of quality standards. Determined to change this narrative, the hospital embarked on a journey of continuous improvement, striving to enhance its quality of care to meet and exceed national standards.

This week, as part of its ongoing efforts, Kabudula Community Hospital underwent a rigorous assessment of its quality of care. The assessors, after thorough evaluation, bestowed upon the hospital a well-deserved 2-star rating, recognizing the strides made in elevating the quality of services offered.

Dr. Mackson Zephaniah, the hospital in-charge, expressed his elation at this remarkable achievement, stating, "We are thrilled by the recognition bestowed upon us today. It is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire team. We have been steadfast in our pursuit of excellence, and this 2-star rating is a validation of our efforts."

Acknowledging the hospital's past challenges, Dr. Zephaniah highlighted the significant progress made in improving the quality of care. "We have come a long way from being labeled as poor performers. Our previous assessment revealed a quality score of 29%, and to now receive a 2-star rating is truly a milestone for us," he remarked.

Furthermore, Dr. Zephaniah emphasized the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving this feat. "This achievement would not have been possible without the collective efforts of our dedicated staff and the collaboration between departments. It underscores the power of teamwork in driving positive change," he added.

The hospital owes this milestone to the direct funding from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) . Their unwavering support has been instrumental in the hospital's journey. The success of Kabudula Community Hospital is a testament to the power of direct funding in improving healthcare services in government facilities.

The recognition of Kabudula Community Hospital's commitment to quality serves as an inspiration not only to the staff but also to the broader healthcare community. With its newfound status as a center of excellence, alongside Machinga District Hospital, Kabudula Community Hospital is poised to continue its journey of excellence in healthcare delivery, setting a benchmark for others to emulate

First Lady Madame Monica Chakwera says government is making great strides in making sure that Malawians are provided with quality health services.
The First Lady made the remarks at Kabudula Community Hospital where she donated wheelchairs, blood pressure machines, high beds, beddings, buckets, cotton wool, and gauze, among others.
She said the current regime does not only wish to see people have access to health services at a short distance but that the hospitals are well equipped.
“This donation is made as a guarantee of quality health service to citizens of Kabudula like any other catchment area as we strive for the attainment of Malawi Vision 2063’s human capital development enabler through improved good health and well-being in the country,” said Madame Chakwera.
In his remarks upon receiving the donation, Director of Health and Social Services in the Ministry of Health, Dr Wilson Ching’ani, expressed gratitude to the First Lady for the gesture as it will assist in addressing the challenges the hospital are facing in the country.
“This donation is timely, as at Kabudula we serve a large population and there is a lot that we are lacking including human capital, and it is good that as we are expecting additional health workers, there will be equipment used in delivering the services,” he said.
The donation was done in conjunction with Malawi Goodlife, a German organisation and
the first Lady was accompanied by Former Vice President of Liberia, Dr Jewel Taylor and Deputy Minister of Health, Halima Daudi.

In an extraordinary act of compassion, the Kabudula Community Hospital, situated on the outskirts of the capital Lilongwe, received a crucial boost from the Church of Christ Action for Progress this week Monday. Their generous donation of state-of-the-art medical equipment, valued at a staggering half a billion kwacha, brings hope to the over five thousand residents dependent on the hospital’s care.

The donation was prompted by a plea from Dr. Mackson Zephaniah, the hospital’s in-charge, who emphasized the critical issue of neonatal mortality at the facility. Dr. Zephaniah attributed the high mortality rate, though reduced from 13 to 9 per 1000 births last year, to the absence of a nursery facility for new-borns. He observed that the situation was worrisome and that it needed to be contained, especially when compared to the more favorable statistics of sister hospitals under the Lilongwe District Health Office.

Speaking on behalf of the organization, Pastor Chester Mbewe, the board chairperson, said they shared the concerns of the hospital with their partners abroad, culminating in the donation they have made. Pastor Mbewe hopes the equipment they have donated will help improve the situation at the facility.

The donations made are as follows: three baby incubators, 10 baby packs-boxes, 2 baby beds with mattresses, 4 digital beam scales, 1 electronic bed, 3 electronic beds/folded to chairs, 7 IV stands, 1 medical cabinet-shelf-big, 1 medical cabinet-shelf-small, 8 medical gowns, 1 medical refrigerator, 2 examination coaches, 8 movable medical trays, 3 movable tray stands/carries, 2 office tables, 1 oxygen concentrator with IV stand, 6 walking frames and 3 wheelchairs.

Speaking after receiving the donation, the hospital’s in-charge expressed enthusiasm about the donation, as it signified the commencement of establishing the nursery unit for the new-borns.

“We aspire for Kabudula Community Hospital to epitomize excellence in medical care delivery, and this contribution marks a significant stride toward achieving our vision,” concluded Dr. Zephaniah.

Today, we had the pleasure of hosting students from Union College in the United States of America who are studying Emergency Medical Service. They came to learn about tropical medicine and have an experience with rural health facilities. Professor Eric Barber led the students, who attended the hospital's intense morning handovers and later visited different departments of the Kabudula Community Hospital.

The staff at the hospital, who are always welcoming to guests and patients, gave the students a once-in-a-lifetime experience in the most rural area of Lilongwe. Professor Barber expressed his gratitude to the hospital in charge and the entire staff for allowing them to appreciate Malawi in such an amazing way.

The students were so thrilled that they requested to fly a drone and capture aerial views of the hospital. This was quite an experience for the local community, as they watched the bird fly above the hospital. Dr. Zephaniah, the hospital in charge, appreciated the technology and wondered what would happen if Kabudula had its drone technology to deliver essential medical products, such as Malaria items, LA, and MRDTs, to its eight referral health centers.

Kabudula Community Hospital Officially Handed over Ground Telephones for Improved Healthcare Services

Kabudula Community Hospital has recently received a major upgrade in its communication systems, thanks to a successful collaboration between the hospital, contractor Winji Technologies Limited, and funding from GIZ under the Quality Improvement Project. The hospital has officially received local area telephones, which are set to revolutionize the hospital's communication systems.

The introduction of ground phones will facilitate timely communication between hospital offices and wards, improving teleconsultations between nurses, clinicians, and doctors. This will, in turn, lead to improved communication and collaboration between healthcare professionals, leading to better patient outcomes.

The hospital In-Charge, Dr. Zephaniah, expressed his delight during the handover, stating that effective communication is vital in healthcare facilities like Kabudula Hospital. He added that the new phones will significantly improve the quality-of-service provision, eliminating the need to shout across different wards for assistance. Instead, staff can dial the relevant number.

The introduction of local area telephones will also reduce response time during emergencies. In emergency situations, every second counts, and having an efficient communication system in place can make a huge difference in saving lives.

GIZ has been instrumental in providing support to Kabudula Community Hospital under the Quality Improvement Project. The project has helped the hospital improve its healthcare services, and the introduction of local area telephones is a significant milestone in this ongoing journey.

The hospital In-Charge expressed gratitude to GIZ for their support and thanked the contractor, Winji Technologies Limited, for delivering the project on time and within budget.

The upgrade in communication systems at Kabudula Community Hospital is a significant step towards improving healthcare services and improving patient outcomes. This development serves as a reminder of the importance of investing in healthcare infrastructure to ensure patients receive the best possible care.
