Ministry dismisses claims of ‘Superstrain’ of Gonorrhoea in Malawi

Ministry of Health has dismissed reports suggesting the existence of a so-called “superstrain” of gonorrhoea in Malawi, describing the claims as false and an over-exaggeration.

Principal Secretary for Health, Dr. Dan Namarika, clarified that while studies conducted in the country have shown high levels of antimicrobial resistance in gonorrhoea, there is no evidence of a superstrain.

He emphasised that the ministry continues to monitor and respond to antimicrobial resistance trends through surveillance and strengthened laboratory systems, urging the public to rely on verified health information.

The ministry has since reassured the public that treatment guidelines for gonorrhoea remain effective and are regularly reviewed to respond to emerging resistance patterns.

Dr Namarika further appeals to people and pharmacies to avoid buying antibiotics without a doctors prescription, a thing which results in under treatment and can promote drug resistance among other things.

In medical terms, a superstrain refers to a type of bacteria or virus that has become highly resistant to available drugs, making it extremely difficult or impossible to treat with standard medications.
