The Little-known links between HIV and Cervical cancer

2020 theme for the world AIDS day observed every 1st December is “Ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Resilience and Impact”
Cervical cancer is the most common cancer among women living with HIV. The likelihood that a woman living with HIV will develop invasive cervical cancer is up to five times higher than for a woman who is not living with HIV.

As CHAMACA we are striving for early detection of Cervical cancer knowing that it is preventable and curable if diagnosed and treated early.

It is unacceptable to save a woman’s life by ensuring that she has access to antiretroviral therapy for HIV and yet she dies from cervical cancer due to lack of access to cancer screening. Despite their increased risk of cervical cancer, women living with HIV do not receive regular screening or treatment for cervical cancer. It is time to break the silos and build the bridges between HIV and Cervical cancer to save lives.

We light candles for women we lost in the fight against cervical cancer whilst living with HIV.

Week 2 in Nsanje District (Masenjere and Mulolo health centres)

Saturday 28.11.2020
CHAMACA team of specialists managed to screen 90 women.
1 case was reported with v***a and axilla lesions and biopsies taken.
1 case with postmenopausal bleeding was referred for D&C. She will be followed up.

Sunday 29.11.2020
A total of 68 women were screened with the following results:
1 case suspected to be cancer and biopsy was taken for further tests.
Polypectomy was done on 1 cervical cancer case.
1 case was reported with fibroids, and has been referred for further management.

22/11/2020 CHAMACA's dedicated team of specialists visited and screened women in Mbenje village - Nsanje district. Less than 20 women attended the health talk. Such an outcome worried the team.

Surprisingly, 61 women showed up!
57 had normal results

1 Post-menopausal bleeding case with positive test and has been referred for further management.
1 TB suspect has been referred to QECH for further management.
1 case with abnormal vaginal bleeding was treated instantly and will be followed.

On 21 November we visited Ndamera Village, located 30 kilometers from Nsanje Boma. This was our 1st centre to conduct cervical cancer screening. The willingness to be screened overwhelmed us.
31 women were screened and we got the following results:

29 cases tested negative.
1 case had cancer and proper management plan has be instituted.
1 Visual Insipection of the cervix with Acetic acid - VIA was positive and TREATED

Today on 22 November, we will be screening women in Mbenje Village-Nsanje district.

We are deeply saddened by the death of Blandina Khondowe. A fierce advocate for early cancer detection. In her painful moments, she never lost HOPE. Blandina shared that unshakeable HOPE with those fighting different cancers.
A force to reckon with in the fight against cancer, she became.
Now the fighter sleeps, but her legacy lives on!
We will keep on fighting cancer!
We will strive for early detection!
