We hear about them all the time but despite walking around with millions of particles of micro and nano plastics embedded in our brains and every part of our body - seems like most people seem to be functioning alright?

The thing is we’re never going to be able to avoid them totally - we even breathe them in the air, tyres from cars give them off, water, food and clothing is bringing them into our bodies, and even new born babies are born with microplastics present already inside them.

So what can we do? It has been shown a correlation between lower testosterone levels and higher levels of certain chemicals such as BPA and phtalates, present in the plastics. These damage cellular health and can act as endocrine disruptors.

Our bodies do have detoxification pathways - the liver and kidneys work on this, and the presence of microplastics in sweat and urine show that they are being excreted - sulforaphane, a compound found in broccoli and cauliflower (reduced when cooked) aids these processes.

Ultimately, as with every action we take for our health and longevity, absolutism isn’t the aim. We should aim to reduce our exposure and avoid over exposure.

Stop wearing so much plastic - maybe don’t be sweating out in the gym with polyester rubbing against your chest.

Sea salt - maybe you thought sea salt was the healthier option over table salt - but it’s no surprise with all the plastic in the sea that the salt is also full of it. (Goes for fish too)

Tap water and bottled water unsurprisingly is highly effected - reverse osmosis is the highest form of filtration - but when filtering water don’t forget to remineralise so you actually hydrate.

was keenly pointing out a shocking new study on canned soup - it showed 1200% increase in microplastics in the urine of participants in just 5 days of eating canned soup. And that’s only what’s being excreted! The linings of canned foods in general are not good news - but then we should try to avoid food that comes in any kind of packet anyway.
