Imagine if when you were crying growing up instead of “stop your crying” you got a hug. And a little rub on your back.

Imagine when a friend came to you with something so stressful, instead of the impulse to give advice, you just grabbed their hand and told them “I’m here to listen.”

Imagine when you felt sad or down (for no “apparent” reason)—someone you loved wrapped their arms around you and gave you a big hug.

Human touch is one of the greatest healers.

We overlook it.

And yet every inch of our body is meant to co-regulate with everything and everyone around us.

We want to talk and think our way out of everything.

It’s time to soothe each other. Pause with each other. And stop expecting ourselves to be machines.

More hugs, less advice

My last reel on rest had so many people talking about the messages they heard growing up:

“If you have time to lean, you have time to clean!”
“Make yourself useful”
“Don’t be lazy”
“Are you just going to sit there all day?!”

Reinforced over and over again we feel shame for not doing.

Some of us even jump up pretending to be busy if we hear someone walk into the room. It runs deep.

Rest is productive.

We’ve evolved to work hard, then rest. Our body needs parasympathetic recovery. Our mind needs to decompress and drift off. Our body needs stillness and quiet.

Think about people who are always going. Who can’t sit still. This is fight or flight energy. And if you notice, they might get s lot done but they never feel settled. Sometimes their mind is completely scattered.

Tell yourself: I AM SAFE TO REST.

Give yourself that nap. If your body needs more rest, sleep later. If you’re exhausted at 8pm put yourself into bed. Your body is speaking— listen. Guilt free
