What brought me to my path?

Let’s start here:

When I was in my late 20’s, it was a time of recklessness. My Saggie arrow needed an aim and I was aimless. I had just wrapped up a very toxic relationship and felt very low and depressed. I remember crying, reflecting on my life, and knowing that there was something more to life than what I was experiencing. Something inside me knew I needed to find out what that was.

Around this time, I had also started attending a spiritualist group and I was learning many things: scrying, channeling, tarot, candle gazing, sacred geometry, etc. That’s when spirituality became my passion. It was the early stages so, I hadn’t quite gotten into the meaning and symbolism of things but it was enough to really get me inspired.

Over the next few years, it began to evolve for me. I really became motivated by why things happen and what they are here to teach us. I knew I wanted to transmute the experiences I had into lessons. Gain wisdom. I had always been a person who likes to journal but my journaling became a way for me to really understand life better. It helped me to become more insightful and I was learning all the time. I knew I wanted my passion for spirituality to become my new career but I didn’t quite know how. I decided I would become an energy healer.

I was working in retail management and had one, very fateful conversation with a very good friend at the time. She was an herbalist and a massage therapist. I was telling her that I really wanted to change careers and become an energy healer. She explained to me that if I wanted to be taken seriously as an energy healer, I would need a license to touch. So, I started looking for a massage therapy school that also offered Reiki classes. I found a school in Lubbock but it didn’t work out, the class size was too small and they had to postpone. Then, I had another fateful conversation, this time with my mom. She suggested I look in the Nashville area, since that’s where she lived. I did just that, my already chaotic life was kind of unraveling anyway.

That’s when I stumbled upon Cumberland Institute of Holistic Therapies in Brentwood, Tennessee. They ticked all the boxes of anything I could want. I called and had a conversation with Teresa Geene. I didn’t even have to tour, I knew inside this was the school for me. This was in May. By mid September, I relocated to Nashville and began my journey. It was the best thing I could have ever done.

“Fortunately, some are born with spiritual immune systems that sooner or later give rejection to the illusory worldview grafted upon then from birth through social conditioning. They begin sensing that something is amiss, and start looking for answers. Inner knowledge and anomalous outer experiences show them a side of reality others are oblivious to, and so begins the journey of awakening. Each step of the journey is made by following the heart instead of the crowd, and by choosing knowledge over veils of ignorance. “

The Hermit in tarot represents a time when we must go within . A sacred solitude. A hallowed incubation. A time of introspection and self-analyzation.

The Hermit is associated with the astrological sign of Virgo. Ruled by the Earth element. Naturally grounded in methodical thought, organization, and attention to detail. Critical and quite analytical, they have thought everything through and based on practicality, know what is best.

Carl Jung describes this inward seeking as the dissent into the cave of self in search of the soul. In his terms, he means within the subconscious. The going within and facing all the frightful things he encounters.

“Shadows sweep over me. I am seized by fear, but I know I must go in.”

This really highlights the uncomfortable nature of facing the inner world.

There are many things we face that we would rather not see when we turn inward. We must set aside all that we think we know in order to see with more objective eyes. Allowing the truth to dissolve the identity we cling to to make ourselves seem more virtuous (the hero). This requires an ego death, over and over again. That is the humbling nature of the ego death. As the layers peel, the truth of the light of the soul begins to peer through. Who am I before the world told me who I was?

“Help me so that I do not choke on my own knowledge. The fullness of my knowledge threatens to fall in on me.” He goes on to later say, “…if you enter into the world of the soul, you are likely a madman and a doctor would consider you to be sick.” He equates the unraveling of the persona to a madness. Earlier, he says, “I am stunned, but I want to be stunned, since I have sworn to you, my soul, to trust you even if you lead me through madness.”

All of this seeking comes with pain and suffering. It is painful events that bring about the shattering of the persona. Leaving the inner world ripe for discovery and the hero vulnerable to his own murder.

“If the spirit of the depths seizes you, you will feel the cruelty and cry out in torment. The spirit of the depths is pregnant with iron, fire, and death. You are right to fear the spirit of the depths, as he is full of horror.”

It is those times in our lives that we shatter, that give us the opportunity to transform or regress. We must choose.

“Therefore I take part in that murder; the sun of the depths also shines in me after the murder has been accomplished; the thousand serpents that want to devour the sun are also in me. I myself am a murderer and murdered, sacrificer and sacrificed. The upwelling of blood streams out of me.” This is the symbolic blood sacrifice to the alter of the soul. We must always give something in order to gain what we truly want. What are you willing to give up to gain the light and truth of your soul? Continue on the well worn path that you know, or descend into your own darkness and choose a new path? It is up to you, the seeker.

“This is how I overcame madness. If you do not know what divine madness is, suspend judgement and wait for the fruits.”

The many versions.

Throughout our life, if we’re lucky, we get to experience the many versions of ourselves. All the people we were before we arrived at the person we stare at in the mirror today.

Some of those versions we love, some of them…maybe not so much. When was the last time you checked in with those versions of yourself that you’re harder on? When was the last time you just sat with yourself and allowed those versions to feel worthy? Told them it would get better and that they’re safe and loved?

All the good, bad, and ugly parts of ourselves are what makes us whole. The parts we don’t want to accept will keep us trapped. What we resist, persists. We are feeding it by avoiding it, giving it power. It will direct our lives and we will call it fate. What almost all humans need most is to feel accepted and loved. Without realizing, it is we that must accept and love ourselves. We must accept those parts of ourselves that we want to cut out. We have learned so much from the parts of ourselves we’d rather not face, they taught us so much. Then we ignore those parts because they feel uncomfortable. How can something so valuable be ignored? Or, in some cases, overly identified with? Either way we are perpetuating the guilt, shame, or fear associated with these parts of ourselves. Sometimes we even allow these parts to define us as a whole.

While they are a part of the whole, they do not define the whole. We are such multifaceted beings capable of being two, seemingly opposite, things at one time. We are so very many things all at once and to think we can be defined by one aspect is selling ourselves short. If we see ourselves this way, it’s no wonder others do too.

Give yourself a chance to unfold before you. Get to know all parts of yourself and give them the love and honor they deserve.

“I have shed my skin so many times, the graveyards must be full of all the people I used to be.”

The Spiritual Path is one of constant transformation. It’s being birthed and dying over and over again. It’s the peeling away of all that is not the true self. It’s seeking. The seeking of self and truth, greater wisdom and understanding.

Oftentimes, this road comes with great challenge. Learning, only to unlearn and relearn. Each time, growing stronger and more empowered in who we are.

As cyclical beings, our wounded parts come back around again - at a later time - to be re-ignited and open to deeper healing. Each time - we get to approach this healing with the wisdom we have gained.

Carl Jung says we must murder the hero within us. The part of us that we think should be perfect. All in order to allow the darker part of ourself to breathe. To be recognized and to be integrated into the whole. We cannot be whole without accepting we are both.

In the end, we must reveal the deepest wound. Witness it for what it is, and give it the recognition and acceptance it deserves. If we call the demon by its name, it loses its power. We must give all parts of ourselves the acceptance they require. That is the Journey.
Run into the Fire of Transformation, let it burn away all that you are not.
