Dr. Kiley Hanish I endured the tragedy of my first child being stillborn and now understand how essential it is to participate in your own healing.

I firmly believe that our stories can serve as catalysts for evolution and am honored to help you navigate this journey.

This weekend I was in Chicago with these amazing women — who are both mentors and colleagues—for the Pink Party (hence the pink outfits). I’m honored to be serving (and fundraising for) grieving families and their providers in the darkest days. 💕 and a special shoutout to the Jane’s Room coordinators who were able to join us!

As part of the Blue Shift Yuba-Sutter Perinatal Mental Health Conference, I facilitated a panel with other bereaved parents. This is often one of the most impactful pieces of training health professionals, when they can hear lived experiences. One attendee said “You just never know what someone has been through.”

Consider adding a parent panel to your perinatal bereavement training.

It was an honor to work with First Five Yuba County to create this year’s Blue Shift Yuba-Sutter’s Perinatal Mental Health Conference with a focus on pregnancy and infant loss. I want to give a shoutout to .tag.foundation Sharing Parents of Sacramento, and Adventist Health Rideout in Marysville for all doing amazing work to support grieving parents in the community.

Thank you to everyone who’s checked in. I live across the street from Eaton Canyon, Altadena, where the fire started on Tuesday evening. I’ve been evacuated and not sure when we will be able to go home. I am safe, and we were so lucky to have our home survive. I am in debt to Andy Silk for saving my home. This is so scary, and much of Altadena, including homes, businesses, schools, places of worship, have burned to the ground. I purchased a couple extra copies of new book To Tend and To Hold: Honoring our bodies, our needs, and our grief through pregnancy and infant loss. This one is going in my neighborhood library box. I trust that it will find its way into the hands of somebody who needs it. 💜

I recently recorded this podcast with as part of her 10th anniversary of her book, Grieving Parents: Surviving the Loss as a Couple (2014), which I contributed to. Search for “How to Deal with Grief and Trauma” where you listen to podcasts. We spent this time reflecting on my journey over the past 10 years (and for me, 19 years). It’s such a helpful exercise to reflect to change. Thank you for this opportunity.

I just returned from facilitating the Women’s Retreat for Bereaved Mothers. This retreat was specifically for women further out from their loss experience, because we know that grieving the loss of a child is lifelong.
In 2014, I hosted the first RTZ retreat. I wanted to create a space that I didn’t have.— I was nurtured, didn’t feel so alone, and received some guidance on how to navigate life after the profound loss of my child dying. Since then, RTZ has hosted 20 women’s healing retreats. We now have two types of retreats: Honoring Our Losses (usually in May) and Finding Yourself After Loss (Fall). I am so honored to hold space for these incredible and brave women.
