April showers bring…

…the increased risk of your horse developing a skin condition like rain rot, a contagious bacterial skin disease (often mistaken for a fungal condition) called dermatophilosis which is caused by the bacterium "Dermatophilus congolensis.”

How does rain rot happen?
The organism responsible for rain rot lives in the outer layer of the skin; if the skin is compromised by too much moisture or cracks, or if the horse has a weaker immune system, it’s easier for the pathogen to activate and establish an infection that causes from pinpoint to large, crusty scabs (pro tip: Your horse will NOT thank you for picking at them!).

Why should you not mistake rain rot for a fungal disease?
Antifungal medications and topicals have no effect on the bacteria responsible for rain rot, therefore diagnosing the condition correctly is critical! If left untreated, the condition can even progress to a point where it opens the door for more serious, secondary skin infections. It’s also important to note that this organism is contagious and may be passed to other horses by tack, equipment or insects, therefore disinfection of equipment is vital to prevent spread.

If you suspect your horse has rain rot, be sure to consult your veterinarian on the best treatment plan. While there are a million over-the-counter products available, your horse doctor may have cause to prescribe a specific course of action based on the severity of your horse's case.

Here is a great reminder from our friends at Rhinebeck Equine on why it's so important to conduct a physical exam prior to administering vaccines!

"🌡️ During a routine physical exam, Dr. Cassandra Shores was surprised to discover the 15-year-old grade gelding had a fever. Due to the fever, Dr. Shores opted to postpone vaccinating the horse until his immune system was healthy enough to respond to the vaccines. Further diagnostics were performed to determine the cause of the fever. And appropriate treatment was initiated. The gelding was vaccinated at a later date.

🩺 Fortunately, the fever was caught early due to Dr. Cassandra Shores performing a physical exam prior to administering vaccines."

🪢 Neonatal Maladjustment Syndrome AKA “dummy foal syndrome” affects 1-5% of live foal. These foals fail to recognize their mares and have no interest in nursing. They can be difficult to manage and may not survive without veterinary intervention. They often require round the clock intensive care to keep alive (feeding tube, IV fluids) until they begin nursing on their own. The Madigan Foal Squeeze shown here is a technique developed to reenact the birthing process by applying pressure to the rib cage using ropes. The squeeze triggers biochemical changes in the central nervous system that are critical for transitioning the foal from being asleep in the uterus to awake and conscious at birth. The pressure around their torso causes the foal to go into a sound sleep and the squeeze is held for approximately 20 minutes. Once finished, pressure is released and the foal will awaken themselves. Our goal is they search for their mother and are stimulated to nurse. This technique is most successful when performed on foals less than 3 days old and can be repeated if needed.

Are you expecting a foal this year? Are you prepared and aware of the normal milestones your foal should reach in their first 48 hours of life? If not, please call 918-827-8000 to speak to one of our vets today! You can also foal at Pine Ridge Equine and take the stress off of yourself! 🚨 Their first 48 hours of life are crucial for their future health and knowing what’s right/wrong will save you $$$ in the long run.

While the number of confirmed equine rabies cases every year is low, talking about this disease remains important because of the potential for human exposure—which does NOT have to involve a bite from an infected horse, as contact of skin or mucosa with the horse’s saliva could be enough to transmit the disease.

Rabies has many faces, but they are all deadly—once a horse shows clinical signs, the animal invariably dies within a few days as there is no treatment.

The good news is that modern vaccines are highly effective and current AAEP recommendations list rabies as one of the “core vaccines” that should be given to all horses annually to maintain immunity (read the full AAEP vaccination guidelines here: https://aaep.org/guidelines/vaccination-guidelines).

Equine rabies is a real risk for all horses, and a public health concern as well. Be sure to set up a regular vaccination schedule with your veterinarian if you haven’t already done so. Remember that strange behavior on behalf of your equine friend is always a valid reason to check in with your horse doctor!

Here is some very timely and important information courtesy of the horse doctors at Pine Ridge Equine Hospital:

As we are in the midst of foaling season, let’s talk about what is normal and abnormal. The placenta is made up of two major parts: the red bag (chorioallantois) and the white bag (amnion). The red bag attaches to the uterine wall, which allows the exchange of nutrients and oxygen to the fetus. In a normal delivery the amnion is visible and characterized by a white appearance. A red bag delivery is characterized by a red velvety appearance.

A red bag delivery is considered an EMERGENCY as it signifies premature separation of the placenta leading to a lack of oxygen to the fetus so **you need to intervene immediately.** The red placental membrane should be opened carefully to release fluid, the foal should be delivered/pulled with your assistance and then stimulated to breathe. Foals may develop problems associated with lack of oxygen even though they appear normal at birth.

If your mare is having or had a red bag delivery, you need to call your horse doctor ASAP!
