Bariatric Surgery in Young Adults

There is a trend in many of the patients that we typically see at the Osuna Bariatric Center: they are usually patients who are at least 30 years old or older. There are many factors that may explain why bariatric surgery patients tend to lean towards an older demographic, but this post is not here to explain these reasons. Instead, we are highlighting some of the conclusions that were made in a recent study which focused on looking at the effects of bariatric surgery in young adults. The study looked at 184 young adult patients who had recently undergone bariatric surgery who ranged from the age of 18 to 24. They study wanted to evaluate the long term effects of bariatric surgeries during the first 6 years after their bariatric surgery. The study concluded that young adult patients achieved weight loss that was comparable to the weight loss results that adult patients had after bariatric surgery. The study also shows that postoperative adherence to behavioral recommendations requires additional support from the medical staff than with adult patients.

Liposuction: It is not bariatric surgery and why it is not weight loss surgery

Liposuction is one of the most popular procedures in the world, largely because it has been around for 40 years and there are more than 450,000 liposuction surgeries performed every year. It is a common misconception that liposuction is weight loss procedure, but in reality it is a cosmetic procedure that removes fat and changes your body shape. However, liposuction has recently come under scrutiny because studies conducted by researchers at the University of Colorado School of Medicine have recently found that the fat that is removed typically returns within one year—and it is redistributed to different areas of the body.

On the other hand, bariatric surgery is a stomach operation that reduces the way fat is deposited and the caloric intake of the body. Liposuction may appear like a great option, and a quick fix to a serious issue, but it does not improve your health and long-lasting weight loss. Bariatric surgery can provide long-term weight loss and it can be a permanent treatment or morbid obesity.
