Whether a pandemic like a coronavirus exists or not, the need for elderly care will always be important for millions of elderly around the world.
Under normal circumstances, high-touch and often low-paid workers provide their elderly clients at home with a critical link to the outside world.
They also keep them safe and healthy at home. Caregiving, whether formal or informal, is a difficult and often under-appreciated, but important job.
Here are some things a Caregiver can do to keep the elders safe during this period
1) Keep the elderly at home at all times. Let others buy them food and run errands.
2) Be more vigilant of your elderly’s condition and alert their doctor right away if their condition changes, especially if you see the telltale signs of Covid-19: fever, persistent cough, and shortness of breath.
3) Consider using telemedicine as the first option if the elderly person’s condition changes. In Malaysia, Doc2Us and TELLME, and several others, offer such services.
4) Caregivers should practise proper hygiene at all times for themselves and their patients.
5) Caregivers must frequently wash their hands and use hand sanitisers.
6) Surfaces should be wiped down periodically.
7) Caregivers should keep visitors away and/or at a proper distance — this is critical.
8) Make sure the elderly continue to stay active by exercising to the extent possible.
9) Continue to ensure the elderly eat well.
