In 2014, actor Morgan Freeman decided to turn his 124-acre ranch in Mississippi into a sanctuary for wild bees. He brought in 26 beehives from Arkansas and planted acres of bee-friendly vegetation like clover, magnolia trees, and lavender. Freeman doesn’t collect honey or wear a protective suit—his goal is simple: help reverse the decline of bee populations caused by pesticides, habitat loss, and disease.

Bees are responsible for pollinating a third of the food we eat, yet their numbers have dropped sharply in recent years. Freeman’s ranch serves as a pesticide-free refuge where bees can thrive naturally. He’s not a beekeeper for profit—he’s using his land and resources to support a struggling species.

Is this the kind of solution we need more of? Should more landowners set aside space to help pollinators survive?
