Had a great time on radio today sharing and debunking common eye myths 👁️🎙️

From carrots “curing” eyesight to myths about glasses and eye treatments, we went through a bulk of myths and misconceptions. It was a fun and engaging 1-hour session filled with eye health awareness, laughs, and eye-opening conversations.
(pun intended)

Always happy to spread awareness and help people understand their eyes a little better 💙

I had a lovely session last week whereby I spoke about seeing well and living well as we get older. There are many aspects of eye health that can be tackled just by DIY method in the comfort of your own space. Preventive medicine is the way to go forward!
I had a great time sharing my tips and enjoyed the Q&A session thoroughly with the folks at GreenAcres retirement home.

Educating the public, one segment at a time.
I thoroughly enjoy speaking about ophthalmology and find it a passion to help people be less scared of an eye check-up. This can only happen with proper counselling and education, creating awareness and debunking myths and overclaims by irresponsible people.

At the age of 16, I organised a state-level event. I remember, my mother drove me to every school and waited in the car for me as I went in alone to approach the school principal to invite the respective school to participate in a drama competition to raise awareness about AIDS. I remember thinking, "How can I even think about organising something of such magnitude??" But I did it. Somehow. Successfully organised and executed the event after 3 months of planning and preparing.

I also made the red ribbons (symbol of AIDS awareness) at home and went school to school to sell them, to raise fund to cover the expenses incurred. I was guided by my brother (who is a King Scout btw) who helped me approach sponsors too.

Highlight of the whole thing is emailing Marina Mahathir (president of Malaysian AIDS Council back then) who responded to me and supported my event by sending over posters and brochures to share on the event day. It was fulfilling indeed.

Fast forward, that same year I went on to receive the Queen's Guide Award from the Queen herself in an event held in Kangar, Perlis. It was an unforgettable experience. Guiding shaped me into becoming who I am. It wasn't the books. It wasn't the exams. It was about finding my purpose and challenging myself to strive to be better each day.

Lovely to reminisce and think back about memories like this.

As I prepare my slides for an upcoming talk in a retirement home, I started thinking about how we need to look after ourselves as we get older. Aging is inevitable but losing your health is not.

It made me wonder about what’s one small thing you do each day to look after your health?

It doesn’t have to be anything big or even related to the eyes… just something that helps you feel like you're investing into your health in the long run.

As for me, it is the use of sunscreen on my face and sunglasses when I'm out in the sun.

So, come, tell me!

29/04/2026

Yes… a little name change. It's still me.
And no, I didn’t just wake up one day and decide to rebrand for fun.😄Let's just say it's been a reflective Wednesday today.

Over time, I realised that many people want to take care of their eyes, but there’s just so much information out there that it becomes confusing very quickly. One person says this supplement can “treat everything”, another says “don’t worry, got KKM approval”… and before you know it, you’re not sure what’s actually true anymore.

So I thought, why not create a space where you can just… ask?
Don't worry, I won't judge. I enjoy debunking and clarifying while helping people understand more about their eyes.
No pressure, no judgement, and definitely no complicated medical jargon thrown at you.

That’s how I decided to change this page into a place where I can share what I see every day in clinic, explain things in a way that actually makes sense, and hopefully help you make better decisions about your eyes without feeling overwhelmed.

I’ll be putting out short, simple stories and explanation here. You know, the kind you can watch in between your daily scroll. We can cover common eye problems, things people often ignore, and yes… occasionally debunking those “too good to be true” treatments that somehow treat everything from cataracts to glaucoma (unbelievable out-of-this-world claims!)🙃

So if you’ve ever had a question about your eyes however trivial they may seem or something you think is “probably nothing”, feel free to drop it in the comments or send me a message.

Chances are, if you’re wondering about it… someone else is too.

Let’s make eye care a little less confusing, and a lot more honest.

Dr Abirami 👀

A little fear in the beginning… and a lot of smiles in the end.

“Doctor, I’m scared…” 😟
This is something I hear so often before surgery.

And then, not long after…
“Doctor, everything looks so clear.” 😍

Cataract surgery may only take minutes,
but doing it well takes years of skill, precision, and quiet decisions in every step.

Because in surgery, shorter time doesn’t mean simpler work.
If anything, it often means the opposite.

The smoother it looks,
the more mastery is behind it.

And the best part?
Seeing that fear melt into relief,
and patients walking away with clearer vision and all smiles. That confidence and independence regained is priceless to see. 🤩
