Proton Beam Therapy is an advanced form of radiation treatment that delivers highly precise energy directly to the tumour, stopping at its target and minimising radiation exposure to surrounding healthy organs. This makes it especially effective for cancers located near sensitive areas and for patients who require carefully targeted treatment.

At Mount Elizabeth Hospitals, proton therapy is guided by specialist oncology teams, supported by advanced planning, and technology designed for highly personalised cancer care.

Learn how precision makes a meaningful difference — speak with our oncology team to explore your treatment options today.

A kidney transplant made possible by friendship, not blood.

What started as a simple welcoming gesture, a bowl of Tang Yuan (a traditional Chinese dessert symbolising warmth and reunion) became a bond strong enough to change a life.

When Jing Hui was later diagnosed with kidney failure caused by IgA nephropathy, his friend Jian En stepped forward with a decision that went beyond words: to become a living kidney donor. Not because they were related by blood, but because they were connected by trust, empathy and genuine friendship.

Four years after the Living Donor Kidney Transplant (LDKT), both men are healthy, leading full lives, and raising families of their own — a testament to how planned, living donation can offer the best long-term outcomes for patients.

▶️ Watch their heart-warming journey, with insights from Dr Adrian Liew, who explains why living donor kidney transplants are often preferred for better survival and quality of life.

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻‑𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆.🫀

When an 8-year-old came to us with severe heart block, everyday activities left her exhausted and dizzy. Her heart was beating dangerously slowly, especially at rest.

Instead of open-heart surgery or wires running through veins, cardiac electrophysiologist 𝗗𝗿 𝗣𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗼𝗷𝗼𝗱𝗷𝗼𝗷𝗼 and his team implanted a 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 directly into the heart through a vein. This was done without chest incisions or implanted wires.

Why this matters:
✔️ No wires that can break as a child grows
✔️ A device that can be retrieved and replaced when needed
✔️ A minimally invasive procedure with fast recovery
✔️ Longer battery life, which may reduce future procedures
✔️ Lower risk of infection

At Mount Elizabeth Hospital, our cardiologists work closely with paediatric specialists to plan care that considers both immediate needs and long-term growth.

For families navigating heart rhythm conditions in children, understanding the available options can help guide next steps.

What seemed like a stomach upset became a life-changing moment for Mdm Chua.

When she first noticed blood in her stool, she thought it was food poisoning. But worsening symptoms led her to urgent care, where doctors uncovered a gastrointestinal bleed linked to 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀. With close follow-up and monitoring, her care team later detected an early-stage liver tumour, allowing timely treatment before the disease progressed further.

At 79, Mdm Chua underwent keyhole liver surgery, guided by Dr Lee Chin Li and supported by a multidisciplinary team including Dr Wang Yu Tien. Her story highlights the power of early intervention, careful monitoring, and coordinated care — proving that age is never a barrier to receiving expert, safe treatment.

▶️ Watch Mdm Chua’s journey and hear her doctors’ insights on liver cirrhosis, early detection, and minimally invasive surgery.

A new milestone in minimally invasive structural heart care at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital.

Earlier this November, a patient with severe aortic regurgitation, mild stenosis, and high-risk anatomy for coronary obstruction underwent a minimally invasive BASILICA-assisted TAVI, led by Dr. Paul Chiam.

This advanced transcatheter approach helps prevent coronary artery obstruction, expanding treatment possibilities for patients who may not be suitable for conventional procedures or open-heart surgery.

This case represents a clinical success in Southeast Asia using BASILICA on a native aortic valve—a rare and highly complex setting. Supported by a multidisciplinary team including Dr. Lim Choon Pin and Dr. Sivathasan Cumaraswamy, the procedure reflects our growing expertise in transcatheter electrosurgery and commitment to safer, less-invasive heart solutions.

If you or a loved one is exploring advanced minimally invasive options for aortic valve disease, speak with our cardiac specialists to learn more.

𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘀

Recently, a patient underwent cochlear implant surgery using the Cochlear™ Nucleus® Nexa™ System.

For the first time at Mount Elizabeth Orchard Hospital, ENT Surgeon Dr Heng-Wai Yuen placed the implant in a subcutaneous pocket lateral to the temporalis muscle. This approach supports device stability and patient comfort, while the Nexa system’s embedded smart chip enables current hearing performance and future software-driven enhancements.

This marks a step forward in advancing cochlear implant techniques, reinforcing our commitment to innovative yet personalised care to bring hope for our patients.
