Puja|檀城
Puja is a spiritual ritual in Hinduism (also practiced Buddhism) performed to honour, worship, or seek blessings from a deity, spirit, or revered being. At its core, puja is about connecting with the divine, offering devotion and gratitude, and seeking protection, guidance, or inner peace. It can take many forms depending on the context and intention behind it.
There are various types of puja. Daily or home pujas are simple and often involve lighting a lamp, offering flowers, chanting mantras, and making small offerings like incense or food. Temple pujas are more elaborate and typically performed by trained priests with sacred rituals, Sanskrit chants, and detailed offerings. Special pujas are conducted with specific goals in mind, such as resolving issues related to marriage, health, career, or spiritual growth. In the context of Nadi astrology or Vedic astrology, people often perform “parihara pujas”, which are karmic remedy rituals meant to neutralize the effects of negative planetary influences or past-life actions.
A typical puja includes invoking the deity, making offerings such as water, flowers, incense, food, and light, chanting mantras, and concluding with an aarti (the ceremonial waving of a flame). The final part of the puja involves distributing prasad—food or offerings that have been blessed by the divine and returned to the devotees. In essence, puja is not just a religious practice, but a sacred dialogue between the individual and the divine, symbolizing surrender, devotion, and alignment with higher consciousness.
