Hemoglobin is a protein that makes your red blood cells red-colored. When hemoglobin picks up glucose from your bloodstream, the hemoglobin becomes glycosylated.

Glycosylated hemoglobin is HbA1c. The HbA1c test measures the perventage of HbA1c in your blood-a number that corresponds to your average blood glucose for the previous 3 months.

People who have diabetes need this test regularly to see if their levels are staying within range. It can tell if you need to adjust your diabetes medicines.

A blood glucose test is used to find out if your blood sugar levels are in the healthy range. It is often used to help diagnose and monitor diabetes.

Your doctor may order a blood glucose test if you have symptoms of high glucose levels (hyperglycemia) or low glucose levels (hypoglycemia).

Symptoms of high blood glucose levels include:

Increased thirst
More frequent urination
Blurred vision
Fatigue
Wounds that are slow to heal

Symptoms of low blood glucose levels include:

Anxiety
Sweating
Trembling
Hunger
Confusion

You may also need a blood glucose test if you have certain risk factors for diabetes. These include:

Being overweight
Lack of exercise
Family member with diabetes
High blood pressure
Heart disease

If you are pregnant, you will likely get a blood glucose test between the 24th and 28th week of your pregnancy to check for gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that happens only during pregnancy.

Before you conduct the blood glucose test, you will probably need to fast (not eat or drink) for eight hours before the test.

If your results show higher than normal glucose levels, it may mean you have or are at risk for getting diabetes. High glucose levels may also be a sign of:

Kidney disease
Hyperthyroidism
Pancreatitis
Pancreatic cancer

If your results show lower than normal glucose levels, it may be a sign of:

Hypothyroidism
Too much insulin or other diabetes medicine
Liver disease

Point-of-care (POC) or with-patient testing allows GP, Medical staff to accurately achieve real-time, lab-quality diagnostic results within minutes rather than hours. Through the use of portable Finecare Fluorescence Immunoassay Analyzer FS-112, testing at the “point of care” streamlines the diagnostic process and helps ensure patients receive the most effective and efficient care when and where it is needed.

POC testing enables staff to make rapid triage and treatment decisions when diagnosing a patient’s condition or monitoring treatment response. By simplifying the testing process, clinicians can focus on what matters most—providing effective, quality patient care.

With-patient testing offers benefits that extend beyond the bedside. It allows users to improve efficiencies and productivity; simplify processes and procedures; comply with regulatory and performance mandates; and reduce staff burden by bringing the focus back where it belongs: on the patient.
