Take a closer look at the amazing structure of the human amniotic membrane in this coloured scanning electron micrograph.
This thin, transparent tissue surrounds and protects the developing foetus in the womb, and is made up of several layers — the epithelium, compact layer, fibroblast layer, and the outer spongy layer. Together, this intricate network of fibres and cells plays a vital role in health and development before birth.
