International Psychology

International Psychology Virtual Therapy and Consultation Practice. Curated page on International Psychology and Human Rights topics. Page managed by Dr. Anjhula Mya Bais.

Welcome to a "Glocal" reality, where people think globally and act locally! International Psychology (IP) is a nascent yet strong emergent field focusing on global/humanitarian issues and topics. IP studies scientific and indigenous psychologies and its integrations as increasingly the awareness of the interconnectedness of countries and its citizens through globalization is taking centre stage. I

P respects the varied micro systems across communities simultaneously acknowledging its occurrence in the macro system of the world. IP occurs through scholarship, communication and networking, cross-cultural comparison, practice, and pedagogy. Most importantly it's goals are to inform and empower people from the "grassroots" all the way to the "tree tops". This page is here to encourage clarity in thought and sincerity in action.

Dr Anjhula Bais, Chair of the International Board of Amnesty International met with Anwar Ibrahim recently. He is a front runner Prime Ministerial candidate for General Elections 15 being held later this month. The conversation was hopeful, inquisitive, and open about Human Rights in Malaysia. His reflections of solitary confinement join the pattern of enlightenment and deep serenity that have been found in the likes of Nelson Mandela.

2018 marked the release of this long-time Malaysian opposition leader and Amnesty International prisoner of conscience. He has suffered two decades of political persecution.

He was first arrested in 1998, while Deputy Prime Minister, after calling for political reform. He was dismissed from government and charged with corruption and committing ‘illegal’ homosexual acts – allegations he has always denied.

Anwar was beaten up while in police custody and convicted for corruption in 1999 and for ‘sodomy’ in 2000. He remained imprisoned until 2004 when his conviction was overturned.

Anwar Ibrahim’s repeated imprisonments occurred amid a wider crackdown on freedom of expression and peaceful political dissent in Malaysia.

Amnesty International began campaigning on Anwar Ibrahim’s case when he was first arrested in 1998. Its members have since participated in numerous letter-writing campaigns calling for his release.

Thank you American Psychological Association.

Often, psychologists or therapists are thought of as the soft comforting person who says everything is okay and makes everything okay. The way I have applied psychological theory and science, is to look at things AS they are. Not as we would wish them to be, pretend them to be. Eschewing binaries of good or bad, positive or negative, I work with seeing unmistakably what is in front of one and aiming for transformation. The world demands nothing less.
