We believe in access to quality healthcare for all, including people living with HIV. ERASE (Eradicate AIDS And Stigma for Equality) is a movement led by a group of Medical Students from University of Malaya MedSoc (University of Malaya Medical Society). To educate the public about HIV and AIDS and have a better knowledge towards AIDS and HIV.
2. To change the bad perceptions and thoughts towards the People Living with HIV.
3. To create a society which has high awareness towards their role in helping the HIV patients and AIDS patients to continue their daily life as a normal human beings. HIV is the abbreviation for Human Immuno-deficiency VIrus. AIDS is the abbreviation for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Being HIV-positive, or having HIV disease, is not the same as having AIDS. Many people are HIV-positive but don't get sick for many years. As HIV disease continues, it slowly wears down the immune system and progresses to AIDS. With current advancement of medical technology, people who are diagnosed with HIV and get treated, can live like a normal person with a long lifespan. In Malaysia, free anonymous HIV screening is available. Various ways to prevent HIV transmission are available and accessible. Anti-HIV drugs (retroviral drugs) are effective in controlling HIV virus in the body. First line anti-HIV drugs are fully subsidized by government and easily accessible at Government Hospitals. Despite ALL of that, in 2013, there are 16000 Malaysians died due to AIDS-related diseases. This brings us to 2nd objective. Stigma and discrimination towards people living with HIV exists. It prevents people from getting tested, early preventions and treatment, affects their lives, and even abuses the human right of People Living with HIV. This is due to the discrimination and criminalisation of people from the group of high risk of getting infected with HIV, especially in Malaysia. The key population includes s*x worker, gay men and injected drug users. What can you do to help in the war against HIV?
