The CSP has welcomed a new report highlighting the growing crisis in community health services, warning that under-resourced community rehabilitation risks undermining the government’s promise to shift care from hospitals into neighbourhood settings.

Moving your body might heal your mind better than medicine.

A new study of 128,119 people has revealed something powerful, exercise outperformed pharmacy treatments when it came to easing depression. Not slightly. Significantly. The results showed that people who moved more, whether walking, running, or dancing, experienced far greater relief than those relying solely on antidepressants.

Here’s why it works. When you move, your brain releases endorphins and serotonin, chemicals that lift your mood and reduce anxiety. Your muscles send signals that tell your brain you’re safe, alive, and in control. Even 15 minutes of movement a day can begin to shift your mental state, like light breaking through heavy clouds.

This doesn’t mean medication doesn’t matter. For many, it’s essential. But this research reminds us that your body isn’t just something to carry your mind around, it’s part of the cure. Movement is medicine. The gym, the park, or even your living room floor can be your healing space.

Next time your thoughts feel heavy, take a walk. Science says your brain will thank you.

A shocking study reveals that just three weeks of complete bed rest can age your cardiovascular system by over 30 years. Extended inactivity weakens the heart, reduces blood flow efficiency, and can accelerate arterial stiffness, putting your cardiovascular health at serious risk.

Even short periods of immobility, such as during illness or recovery from surgery, can have significant effects on heart function. Experts emphasise the importance of light movement, physical therapy, or gentle exercise to maintain cardiovascular strength and prevent long-term damage.

This research highlights how crucial daily activity is for heart health, demonstrating that the body rapidly responds to inactivity in ways that mimic decades of aging. Staying active, even with simple routines, can protect the heart and preserve overall longevity.

For patients on prolonged bed rest, monitoring heart health and implementing safe physical activity strategies is essential to avoid irreversible cardiovascular decline. This study serves as a wake-up call about the hidden dangers of inactivity.

As we kick off palliative care week leading to World Hospice and Palliative Care Day (WHPCD) on 11 October, here are some reflections from the WHPCA Executive Director Dr Stephen Connor.
Achieving the Promise – Universal Access to Palliative Care: World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2025.

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day (WHPCD) was established in 2005 and has since become one of palliative care’s most significant global days. Each year, a different theme is chosen to emphasise an aspect of palliative care that people may not know about or that is relevant to current events. Dr Stephen R Connor, PhD, Executive Director Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance (WHPCA), wrote an article to tell us more about WHPCD 2025 and its call to action. 🌍 World Physiotherapy Day 2025 🌍

This year’s theme, Healthy Ageing, resonates deeply with my journey. Over the past 15 years as a physiotherapist, I’ve seen how movement shapes more than just physical health, it preserves independence, restores confidence, and sustains dignity across all stages of life.

Physiotherapy is not only about recovery, but also about enabling people to age well, to keep doing the things they love, and to live with purpose.

As I reflect on this milestone, I’m grateful for the opportunity to grow with my patients, colleagues, and this profession that continues to inspire me every day.

Here’s to advancing healthier, stronger futures together. 💙
