Screening tests can help people to find cancer at an early stage, before symptoms appear. When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat or cure. However, when symptoms appear, the cancer may have grown and spread so this can make the cancer harder to treat or cure. When doctor suggests you a screening test, it does not always mean you have cancer because screening tests are done when you have no cancer symptoms.

Cancer occurs in human cells as a result of the accumulation of mutations, and this mutation point may come from factors such as genetics, viruses, environment, and lifestyle habits. Genetics can make individuals carrying undesirable mutations have a higher chance of developing cancer than normal people, while external factors such as environment and viruses are factors that can stimulate the body's immune response system for a long time and are important factors in triggering cancer. Poor lifestyle habits such as drinking, smoking, and staying up late are also factors that trigger cancer.

Healthcare providers use cancer staging systems to plan treatment and develop a prognosis or expected outcome. TNM is the most widely used cancer staging system. T stands for the primary tumor. N stands for lymph nodes and indicates whether a tumor has spread to your lymph nodes. M stands for metastasis when cancer spreads.

Most cancers have four stages. The specific stage is determined by a few different factors, including the tumor’s size and location

Though stages one through four are the most common, there’s also Stage 0. This earliest phase describes cancer still localized to the area where it started. Cancers still in Stage 0 are usually easily treatable and considered pre-cancerous by most healthcare providers.

According to the World Health Organization, there were 48,639 new cancer cases recorded in Malaysia last year, and the cancer incidence in Malaysia is expected to double by 2040. In the 2012-2016 Malaysia National Cancer Registry Report, there was an 11% increase in new cancer cases and nearly 30% more cancer deaths than in the 2007-2011 report. With the increasing number of cancer cases, this will become a major health issue on cancer patients, communities, and the country's health-care system.

Did you know? Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Malaysia, followed by colorectal cancer, lung cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, and liver cancer. Breast, colorectal, and lung cancers make up roughly half of all cancer cases reported by Malaysia's National Cancer Registry. Among the leading causes of death for Malaysian women with cancer are both breast cancer and cervical cancer.
