Restricted and Repetitive Behaviours (RRBs) help autistic children feel safe, regulated, and familiar with their world. 🦋
However, it can hinder their development in some ways.

While RRBs can sometimes affect daily life or safety, they also have strengths — helping children cope, learn, and build important skills.

With understanding and the right support, we can work with RRBs, not against them.
Remember that behaviour is communication. 🙌

💡 Did you know?
Learning disabilities aren’t always visible, and they affect children in different ways.

Some may have trouble with:
📚 Reading (Dyslexia)
✏️ Writing (Dysgraphia)
➕ Math (Dyscalculia)
🗣️ Language (Dysphasia)
🖐️ Fine motor skills (Dyspraxia)
🎧 Processing sounds and visuals (Visual & Auditory Processing Disorder)
📝 Spelling (Dysorthographia)

Every child learns differently—and that’s okay. Understanding and support can make all the difference.

Let’s raise awareness and build empathy for all learners. 💛

Do All Children Learn the Same Way?

Every child learns differently. Some children may struggle with reading, writing, attention, or processing — and this is not a reflection of their intelligence or effort.

Learning differences are real, and with the right support, understanding, and strategies, children can learn, grow, and thrive.

Let’s build awareness, empathy, and support.

💬Autistic communication looks different — and that difference matters.

Some children speak a lot, some speak a little, or communicate in ways that don’t fit typical expectations.
Some avoid eye contact, need more time to respond, or love sharing deeply about their interests.
These are not signs of rudeness or lack of connection but they are signs of different processing and communication styles 🌟

As parents and therapists, we support best when we use clear language, stay patient, and respect all forms of communication.
When children feel understood, connection follows 💛

🎥 What Does Dyslexia Actually Feel Like?
Have you ever struggled to read and wished others could see what it’s like? This eye-opening simulation video shows what reading can feel like for someone with dyslexia — where letters and words seem to shift and move on the page, making reading much more challenging than most of us realize. 👀📚

✨ Why this matters: Dyslexia isn’t laziness — it’s a neurological difference that affects reading for millions of people around the world. Let’s grow awareness, empathy, and support for learners with dyslexia. ♾️

In our previous post, we mentioned that autistic individuals may mask (or hide) their symptoms. This week, we’re exploring the good and bad of masking, and the role of parents and therapists in their autistic kids’ lives.

Masking can start early, often as children learn which behaviours receive praise or help them fit in. While masking may help them cope in certain situations, it can also be tiring and affect how they feel about themselves.

By learning what masking looks like and why it happens, we can better support our children to feel safe, understood, and accepted just as they are. They deserve to know that they are not alone in this. 💛🤝

Self-stimulatory behaviours (SSBs), often called stimming, are more than just actions you see on the outside — they serve an important purpose 🤍

For many autistic individuals, SSBs help regulate emotions, manage sensory input, communicate needs, and cope with stress. They can bring comfort, focus, and a sense of safety in an overwhelming world.

Instead of asking “How do we stop this?”, we can pause and ask “What is this behaviour telling us?”
Understanding the why helps us respond with empathy rather than judgement.

When SSBs are safe, they deserve acceptance — not suppression. By creating supportive environments that honour these needs, we help autistic individuals feel seen, respected, and regulated.

Acceptance starts with awareness. Let’s shift the narrative from control to compassion ✨

As 2025 comes to a close and we step into a new year, I’ve been reflecting on what I’ve learned that’s worth bringing into 2026🤍

Working with autistic kids has taught me that connection doesn’t look just one way.
Sometimes it’s through shared stories,
sometimes through special interests,
and other times through quiet moments that slowly build trust.

This year reminded me that slowing down and meeting my kids where they are is the key to building a strong and meaningful therapist-client relationship🔑

MY Kid Therapy hopes to carry these lessons into the new year:
Keep an open mind, create safe spaces, and always lead with empathy.
Here’s to more understanding, growth, and genuine connection in the year ahead✨
