The OrthoInsider series:
Are steroid injections the “magic fix” for knee pain? 🤔💉
Not so fast.
Steroid (corticosteroid) injections can help reduce inflammation FAST — but only for short-term relief. Research shows the effect usually lasts weeks to a few months, not long-term. And repeated injections may even worsen cartilage damage over time. ⚠️
Unfortunately, many people are being offered steroid shots for ALL types of knee pain, even when they’re not appropriate.
👉 Steroids are NOT a cure for osteoarthritis.
👉 Steroids are NOT meant to be repeated frequently.
👉 Steroids are NOT for everyone.
👉 Repeated use of steroids may lead to Cushing's syndrome, weight gain, and uncontrolled blood sugar levels.
Better long-term options include:
• Weight loss & strengthening exercises 💪
• Physiotherapy
• Bracing
• Hyaluronic acid, PRP, or other regenerative options
• Surgical correction (if needed)
Your knees deserve more than quick fixes.
