Did you know chest physiotherapy can make breathing easier?
One of the ways we help patients is through manual chest physiotherapy. This may involve gentle clapping with a cupped hand or massage-like movements on the back to loosen mucus in the lungs. With the help of specific body positions, gravity assists in moving the loosened mucus into larger airways where it’s easier to clear. You’ll be asked to lie down on your back, right or left side during the process. There are several techniques we may use depending on your needs. These include physiotherapy techniques, such as :
•Percussion and postural drainage(mentioned above)
• Nebulisation
• Suctioning
•Active cycle of breathing (ACBT)
•Positive expiratory pressure (PEP)
• Oscillating PEP devices
Each method is slightly different, but the goal is the same: to reduce mucus build-up, open the airways, and support better lung function.
If you’re struggling with mucus build-up or breathing difficulties, speak to your physiotherapist to see which approach is right for you.
