🍯 Coughs and colds are everywhere this time of year.

If your little one starts coughing, you might wonder if a spoonful of honey works just as well as shop-bought cough medicine.

A Cochrane review looked at honey compared to:
✅ Over-the-counter cough remedies
✅ Bromelin (a pineapple enzyme) mixed with honey
✅ Placebo (fake treatment)
✅ No treatment

Here’s what they found:
🐝 Honey probably helps reduce cough symptoms more than placebo and even salbutamol (an airway-opening drug) when given for up to 3 days.
🐝 Honey is probably better than no treatment for easing cough and helping kids sleep.
🐝 Honey seems about the same as dextromethorphan (a common OTC cough remedy ingredient) or honey mixed with bromelain.
🐝 Honey may work better than diphenhydramine (an antihistamine) for cough relief.

⚠️ Giving honey to infants under 12 months is not advised due to the risk of poor immunity against bacteria that may be present, which can cause paralysis.

Most children in these studies only had honey for one night, so the evidence isn’t super strong yet.
