Addiction is a mental illness. The biopsychosocial model explains that addiction is a result of a constellation of factors. Some are universal, such as the way substances affect brain chemistry, leading to dependence and cravings. Others are more individualized and shaped by a person’s unique social and psychological environment.

4 June is International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. The purpose of this day is to "acknowledge the pain suffered by children throughout the world who are the victims of physical, mental and emotional abuse." In 2019, the Government of Namibia launched the Violence Against Children and Youth Survey. They found that one in ten females (11.8%) and one in thirteen males (7.3%) experienced sexual abuse before the age of 18, nearly one in three females (32.9%) and two in five males (41.2%) experienced physical violence before age 18, and one in ten females (11.4%) and one in thirteen males (7.8%) experienced emotional violence by a parent, caregiver, or adult relative in childhood. Let's stand up for and protect our children!

HAPPY GLOBAL DAY OF PARENTS!!
The theme for 2025 is "Raising Parents" - drawing attention to an essential, but often underappreciated reality: parenting is a learned skill. Parents and caregivers require time, resources, and support in order to raise children in a nurturing and positive environment. How amazing to know that we, as parents, have the privilege of influencing the future generation.

A therapist’s job is to help people tap into their own wisdom and resources. People are the true experts on themselves! Deep down they know what is needed better than anyone else, including their therapist. Great therapists are only guides, helping the person ask the right questions and shape their own life. Therapy is for everyone.

World Health Day, celebrated on 7 April 2025, will kick off a year-long campaign on maternal and newborn health. The campaign, titled Healthy beginnings, hopeful futures, will urge governments and the health community to ramp up efforts to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths, and to prioritize women’s longer-term health and well-being. Postpartum depression affects the well-being of many new mothers. A big part of the fight against postpartum depression is educating yourself!!

Educate yourself this Autism Awareness Day:
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication.

Autism looks different for everyone, and each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. Some people with autism can speak, while others are nonverbal or minimally verbal and communicate in other ways. Some have intellectual disabilities, while some do not. Some require significant support in their daily lives, while others need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.

21 March is World Down Syndrome Day. Wear mismatched socks to show your support!! The theme for this year is "Improve Our Support Systems".

Everyone needs support sometimes. People with Down Syndrome need support to live and be included in the community, like everyone else. Families also need support, as they are often supporting their family members with Down syndrome. Support is a key human right that helps make other rights possible. The support that we need is different for each person. We have the right to support that meets our needs and gives us choice, control, and dignity.
