A utility battery can be cheaper than alternatives for key services, reduce operation of costlier plants during constrained periods, and open space for more local renewables. That’s how storage supports long-term affordability and reliability.

GridOnline's New Pricing Structure

GridOnline, NamPower's bulk data backhauling service adopted a new unified national pricing framework, ensuring access to digital infrastructure for the benefit of every Namibian. Previously, GridOnline operated on a cost-recovery pricing structure, based on fibre distance usage.

NamPower's Chief Operating Officer, Fritz Jacobs, who represented the company's Managing Director, Kahenge Haulofu, says, the new model is more than a pricing transformation, as it is about levelling the playing field and utilising the extensive and robust fibre network of NamPower to connect communities and serve as an enabling platform.

"We are adding services that will enable smaller operators to be competitive and to grow, to offer internet connectivity in under-served areas. With these innovations, GridOnline is positioning itself not simply as a network provider, but as a catalyst for digital growth, for business competitiveness, and for social inclusion," Jacobs added at the stakeholder event.

Also speaking at the event, Transmission Executive, Leandro Kapolo, reaffirmed NamPower’s commitment to expanding its network with a clear purpose, of being a driving force in bridging the digital divide and unlocking opportunities for every community through affordable and reliable connectivity.

"GridOnline is more than infrastructure. It is a promise of excellence, innovation, inclusivity and fairness. It is about creating pathways for growth, empowerment, and connection for generations to come. It is about enabling the 4th Industrial Revolution," Kapolo said.

GridOnline which was established in 2019, has evolved into an essential pillar of Namibia’s ICT infrastructure and a trusted platform for bulk data transmission.

By charging off-peak and discharging at peak, Omburu BESS can offset emergency energy purchased from the region and support tariff stability over time. It’s a practical way to match supply with demand as more renewables come online.

: Omburu BESS is designed at 51 MW / 51 MWh using Lithium-Ion (LFP) technology, sited at Omburu Substation in Omaruru, and built to deliver stacked grid services that improve stability and value.

The Omburu BESS is Namibia’s first utility-scale battery storage project, and it’s a true pioneer for future energy projects. It’s a battery energy storage system that stores electricity for later use, strengthening reliability and helping the grid handle renewable energy smoothly.

Omusati and Kunene Regions Receive from NamPower

In its quest to assist national development efforts, NamPower continues to sow its small seeds, hoping it will become seedlings and later bear fruit to be reaped by future generations.

As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting education in the country, NamPower has availed N$300,000.00 for the purchase of phonics and reading books for lower primary grades for schools in the Kunene Region.

“Recognising that reading and comprehension is a challenge at junior primary level across the country, these essential learning materials will strengthen foundation literacy skills to learners in those specific grades,” said NamPower’s Sakaria Shivolo at Ruacana during the handover ceremony.

According to Petrus Shipalanga who received the donation on behalf of the Kunene regional educational directorate, the donation directly aligns with the education ministry’s strategic intervention to curb and ultimately eradicate learning poverty at foundational level.

During the same occasion, NamPower also handed over an ambulance and medical equipment worth N$238,958.00 to the Omona Watjihozu Health Centre, as well as 35 single-bed mattresses to the value of N$34,212.00 to the Uahekua Herunga Primary School hostel in the Omusati Region.

Receiving the medical equipment on behalf of the health ministry, Omusati Regional Health Director, Dr Alfons Amoomo promised to ensure proper maintenance, efficient use and responsible management of the equipment to ensure long term benefits for the Ruacana community.

NamPower Continues to Sow Seeds into the Country’s Education Sector

NamPower donated a digital photocopier machine worth N$38,500 to the Oshana Secondary School of Computing, aimed at supporting educational activities and enhancing educational resources. Since its inception, the school has faced challenges with facilities, and the lack of duplicating machines has been one of the issues.

A very excited principal of the Oshana Secondary School, Mr. Andreas Angula said the donation will go a long way, as it will improve educational resources, especially by duplicating formative and summative assessment activities as well as for administrative use.

“This contribution will greatly enhance the learning environment for our learners, ensuring they have access to modern educational tools, resources, and materials, the very thankful principal said.

NamPower again pledges to its commitment to create an enabling environment and provide the necessary support structures to take the future generations of this country to the next level of development, as long as resources allow.
