ASHERMAN'S SYNDROME CAUSES

..My sister/friend/acquaintance went for myomectomy, and she never conceived of a child again...
..I have large fibroids sized ###, but will never go for myomectomy until I have all my kids...

You hear people make the above statement always. Yes that's from what many has conceived in their hearts and has been eyewitnesses to. As much as they are wrong that myomectomy is synonymous to infertility, there are traces of facts in their concepts.

You see, one of the causes of Asherman's syndrome is scraping or cleaning of the uterine wall. It might be surgical or manual scraping. Surgical scrapings are always done during dilatation and curettage especially, also known as D&C. Intrauterine surgery to get rid of fibroids, or repair structural defects may also result in Asherman's Syndrome. But this is not only limited to surgery.

Manual over scraping of the uterus or after delivery in an attempt to remove retained products of conception, can lead to the aforementioned condition. Below are the causes of Asherman's syndrome.

(1) Dilatation and curettage (D&C).
(2) A severe pelvic infection.
(3) Retained placenta requiring manual removal.
(4) Some uterine surgeries like cesarean section (CS), or myomectomy or tumours.

So if you're battling with infertility, and has:

* Undergone any intrauterine surgery/procedures
* Have had series of miscarriages
* Over the age of 35
* Have suffered from complications during delivery period such as retained placenta or postpartum hemorrhaging (bleeding) after delivery
* Have been placed on different types of fertility medications and treatments which is not forth-coming

It's time to visit your doctor. Opt for a Hysterosalpingiography commonly known as HSG or Hysteroscopy (investigations to establish the presence of Asherman's syndrome). Tell him/her that you want to know if you have this condition.

ASHERMAN'S SYNDROME

This is one of the causes of infertility which is unknown to many.

Asherman's syndrome is a condition of the uterus (womb), in which it develops scar tissue or adhesions.

These formation of scar tissues may cause the uterus to merge or fuse together.

Picture a scenario where the epidermis (the outermost skin layer) of a patient who has a burn injury sticks together OR think about the development of scar tissues on the skin after an abrasive injury OR think about the weaves on a basket..... That's what happens inside the uterus. The scars may affect only one or more areas of the uterus or it could affect the whole areas of the uterus.

When this occurs, there won't be a smooth lager where the fetus will be implanted on. This will lead to early miscarriage, without the individual's knowledge that there was a conception after-all.

Sometimes, the scar tissue formation blocks the entrance to the fallopian tubes. This hinders the s***m cells from reaching their target organ; the ovaries.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

(1) Absence of periods
(2) Sparse or irregular periods
(3) Could be menstruating without flow because the exit is blocked by scar tissue
(4) Repeated miscarriages or stillbirth
(5) Infertility

With each organ of reproduction carefully embedded and wrapped up in it's relevant position.
