1. Gutt Opatadine → Most likely Olopatadine eye drops

2. Gutt Hypromellose → Hypromellose eye drops (artificial tears/lubricant)

3. Occ Beoptic-N → Beoptic-N eye drops

Meaning of the abbreviations:

Gutt = Guttae (Latin for “drops”) → Eye drops

Occ = Oculus → Eye

N (in Beoptic-N) usually means it contains Neomycin (an antibiotic component)

BE = Both Eyes

So when it says 1 gtt / BE, it means:

This is where many students make mistakes — but I’ll sharpen you well 💉📚

🔥 Important Pediatric Drug Formulas

1. Dose (mg) = mg/kg × weight (kg)

2. Volume to give = (Prescribed dose ÷ Stock strength) × Stock volume.

3. Infusion rate (mL/hr) when needed

🧒 Pediatric Drug Calculation Practice

🧮 Question 1

A child weighs 12 kg.
Doctor orders Paracetamol 15 mg/kg per dose.
Available syrup: 120 mg/5 mL.

Step 1: Calculate required dose

15 mg × 12 kg = 180 mg

Step 2: Convert to mL

\frac{180}{120} \times 5

= 1.5 \times 5

= 7.5 mL

✅ Answer: 7.5 mL

🧮 Question 2

A child weighs 20 kg.
Prescribed Ceftriaxone 50 mg/kg/day.
Available vial: 1 g (1000 mg).

Step 1: Required dose

50 × 20 = 1000 mg

✅ Answer: 1000 mg (1 g)

🧮 Question 3

A baby weighs 8 kg.
Doctor orders Gentamicin 7 mg/kg/day.
Available: 40 mg/mL.

Step 1: Required dose

7 × 8 = 56 mg

Step 2: Convert to mL

\frac{56}{40}

= 1.4 mL

✅ Answer: 1.4 mL

🧮 Question 4

A child weighs 15 kg.
Order: Amoxicillin 25 mg/kg per dose.
Available: 250 mg/5 mL.

Step 1: Required dose

25 × 15 = 375 mg

Step 2: Convert to mL

\frac{375}{250} \times 5

= 1.5 \times 5

= 7.5 mL

✅ Answer: 7.5 mL

🧮 Question 5 (Slightly Harder 💪)

A neonate weighs 3.5 kg.
Order: Ampicillin 50 mg/kg.
Available vial: 500 mg reconstituted to 2 mL.

Step 1: Required dose

50 × 3.5 = 175 mg

Stock strength:

\frac{500 mg}{2 mL} = 250 mg/mL

Step 2: Volume to give

\frac{175}{250}

= 0.7 mL

✅ Answer: 0.7 mL
