*"Building a Healthier Community: ABSUTH's Commitment to Glacier Preservation and Sustainable Living"*

As we celebrate World Water Day 2025, with a focus on Glacier Preservation, we are reminded of the intricate connection between our planet's water sources and the health of our communities. At Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), we recognize the critical role that glaciers play in regulating the Earth's climate and providing freshwater.

*What's the Big Deal About Glaciers?*

Glaciers are like nature's refrigerators, storing about 75% of the world's freshwater. However, due to climate change, glaciers are melting at an alarming rate, leading to:

- Changes in water availability and quality
- Increased risk of water-borne diseases
- Disruption of ecosystems, leading to loss of biodiversity

*How Does Glacier Melting Affect Human Health?*

The impact of glacier melting on human health is far-reaching:

- *Water scarcity*: Changes in water availability can lead to scarcity, affecting human consumption, agriculture, and sanitation.
- *Increased risk of diseases*: Warmer temperatures and changing precipitation patterns can increase the spread of diseases like malaria, dengue fever, and cholera.
- *Mental health concerns*: The loss of glaciers and the resulting changes in ecosystems can lead to mental health concerns, such as anxiety and depression.

*What Can We Do to Preserve Glaciers?*

At ABSUTH, we recommend the following:

1. *Reduce our carbon footprint*: Reduce energy consumption, use renewable energy sources, and promote sustainable practices.
2. *Conserve water*: Fix leaks, use water-efficient fixtures, and promote water conservation practices.
3. *Support glacier preservation efforts*: Partner with environmental organizations, government agencies, and other stakeholders to support glacier preservation efforts.
4. *Educate and raise awareness*: Integrate climate change and glacier preservation into our curriculum, organize workshops and seminars, and develop educational materials.

*ABSUTH's Commitment to Glacier Preservation*

At ABSUTH, we are committed to doing our part in preserving glaciers and promoting sustainable practices:

1. *Developing sustainable practices*: We are implementing sustainable practices in our hospital, including reducing energy consumption, conserving water, and reducing waste.
2. *Supporting glacier preservation efforts*: We are partnering with environmental organizations, government agencies, and other stakeholders to support glacier preservation efforts.
3. *Educating and raising awareness*: We are integrating climate change and glacier preservation into our curriculum, organizing workshops and seminars, and developing educational materials.

*Conclusion*

The preservation of glaciers is a critical issue that affects us all. At ABSUTH, we are committed to doing our part in preserving glaciers and promoting sustainable practices. We urge everyone to join us in this effort and take action to reduce their carbon footprint, conserve water, and support glacier preservation efforts. Together, we can make a difference and preserve the future of healthcare.

"Detect Early, Protect Your Kidneys: Celebrating World Kidney Day at ABIA STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL (ABSUTH) ABA.

As we commemorate World Kidney Day on March 13th 2025, the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) Aba joins the global community in raising awareness about kidney health and the importance of early detection. This year's theme:
"Are your Kidneys OK? Detect Early, Protect Your Kidneys," emphasizes the crucial role of timely diagnosis and intervention in preventing kidney disease and its complications.

Kidney disease is a growing public health concern worldwide, affecting over 850 million people. In Nigeria, the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is estimated to be around 20-30%. If left undiagnosed or untreated, kidney disease can lead to kidney failure, requiring dialysis or transplantation.

Risk Factors and Causes:
Certain individuals are more susceptible to kidney disease due to underlying risk factors including:

- Diabetes and hypertension
- Obesity and physical inactivity
- Family history of kidney disease
- Age (65 years and above)
- Ethnicity (African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, and American Indians are at higher risk)

Symptoms and Detection
Early stages of kidney disease often have no noticeable symptoms. However, as kidney function declines, patients may experience:

- Fatigue and weakness
- Swelling in legs and feet
- Nausea and vomiting
- Pale or itchy skin
- Frequent urination

Prevention and Cure:
While some risk factors cannot be changed, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of kidney disease:

- Maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise
- Control blood pressure and blood sugar levels
- Stay hydrated and avoid smoking
- Get regular check-ups and screenings for kidney disease.

At ABSUTH, our team of Nephrologists and healthcare professionals are committed to providing comprehensive care for patients with kidney disease. We offer:

- Early detection and diagnosis through blood and urine tests
- Medications and lifestyle modifications to manage kidney disease
- Dialysis and transplantation services for advanced kidney disease

Conclusion:
As we celebrate World Kidney Day, let us emphasize the importance of early detection and prevention in protecting our kidneys. By being aware of the risk factors and symptoms, and taking proactive steps to maintain a healthy lifestyle, we can reduce our risk of kidney disease and its complications.

Goodwill Message from Prof. Ijeoma Nduka, Chief Medical Director, Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) Aba on the occasion of the year 2025 International Women's Day celebration by ABSUMSA

1. Protocols

2. It's always gratifying when young people rally themselves around projects that have long-lasting impacts on their lives and the lives of people around them. The International Women's Day is obviously one such project whose transitive significance can hardly be overlooked.

International Women's Day is a global day that celebrates the achievements of women and calls for action to accelerate gender equality. It is a day to recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political contributions of women worldwide.

The theme for this year's International Women's Day (IWD) celebration is "For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment", while the campaign theme is: "Accelerate Action" - a theme that calls for urgent action to achieve gender parity and eliminate systemic barriers that prevent women from reaching their full potential.

The theme also emphasizes the need to address systemic barriers and biases that women face in both personal and professional spheres.

"Accelerate Action for Gender Equality" is a call to action that encourages society to work together to achieve gender equality. It emphasizes the urgency of the need for change and the importance of inclusion.

For you, my dear younger colleagues, this call for societal action couldn't have come at a better time. It is even moreso, given the new generational shift that nowadays, de-emphasizes gender for inclusivity in practically every sphere of human endeavor.

In our dear State, Abia, we must all applaud the inimitable strides of His Excellency Governor Alex Chioma Otti, in this regard.

The Governor has, since assuming office, shown an exceedingly high regard for gender sensitivity and inclusiveness in his administration. This probably explains why we have today, several women in very top executive positions, not only in His Excellency's cabinet, but also in other leadership criteria in Abia State. As you can see, I am also one of the beneficiaries of His Excellency's largesse, as the first female Chief Medical Director of Abia State's apex tertiary health institution - Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) Aba. Let's give a toast to our dynamic, health-friendly Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti!

3. Conclusion;
Violence, pay gaps, discrimination, and inequality in health, politics, and other areas constitute some of the leading gender issues in our society today. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by these gender issues. Addressing gender inequality is therefore critical across sectors responsible for delivering justice, social, health, and security services, especially in developing climes like ours.

As the very active segment of our society, your roles in championing this cause, this advocacy for gender inclusiveness, is most encouraged. You, the youth, have charge of today's technology. The mass and social media among others are not only at your beck and call, they are constantly at your fingertips - waiting to be effectively and efficiently deployed in the campaign. Everyone is encouraged to get involved.

Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge gender equality. So, indeed, the world beckons on you to step in and lead the campaign, especially on a day like this.

Thank you.
