A Commitment to Quality Healthcare – Gilead Children Hospital Hosts Clinical Meeting and Drug Presentation

Today at Gilead Children Hospital, Abagana, something remarkable happened—not just another day at the hospital, but a day that underscored our unwavering commitment to quality healthcare and safe drug administration.

In partnership with Swipha Pharmaceutical Plc, we hosted a Clinical Meeting and Drug Presentation that brought our medical team together in a meaningful exchange of knowledge, innovation, and dedication to the wellbeing of children.

Swipha, a name trusted for quality and reliability in pharmaceuticals, presented new insights into pediatric drug formulations, reinforcing the importance of proper drug use, resistance management, and evidence-based treatments. It was not just a presentation—it was a reaffirmation of our shared mission.

At Gilead Children Hospital, we believe that every child deserves access to the best care possible—and that begins with informed healthcare professionals and trusted medical partnerships. Our clinical meetings are more than routine—they are part of a culture of learning, accountability, and excellence in care.

As we continue to serve the families in Anambra State and beyond, events like this remind us why we do what we do. Because quality care isn't just a promise—it's a practice.

In Gilead Children Hospital, God Creates while We Preserve.

Simple Steps to Prevent Tooth Decay.
Is my child at risk for tooth decay?
Caring for your child’s tooth from an earlier phase of development is key!

Tooth decay is one of the most common childhood diseases. More than 4 in 10 kids have had decay in their baby teeth.

Eating and drinking lots of sugary foods and drinks puts your child at higher risk for tooth decay. But healthy habits, like brushing and going to the dentist, can prevent tooth decay.

It's important to keep your child’s first teeth — or baby teeth — healthy. Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth. Taking care of your child’s teeth will protect them from tooth decay (cavities).

Simple Steps to Prevent Tooth Decay.

Most babies will get their first tooth around age 6 months. Start these healthy habits now so your child’s smile will stay healthy!

* Wipe your baby's gums with a clean cloth 2 times a day before they get any teeth.

* Start cleaning your baby’s teeth 2 times a day as soon as they come in.

* Teach your child to brush 2 times a day.

* Give your child healthy, low-sugar foods and drinks.

* Take your child to the dentist for regular checkups

Ten Steps for Feeding Babies (0-12 months)

1. Breastfeeding helps protect your baby from illness it may take time for you both to learn how it works best for you – ask for help if you need it

2. Give breast milk, the best option, or infant formula for at least 12 months

3. Begin a vitamin D supplement from birth as milk and foods do not necessarily provide enough

4. Let your baby decide how much milk to drink
Offer a feed when your baby is hungry and remember babies cry for reasons other than hunger

5. Begin to offer food alongside their milk feeds, by six months but not before four months when you think your baby is ready for more

6. Offer high iron foods from beginning of complementary feeding (weaning) – meat, oily fish, eggs, pulses and nut butters

7. Offer spoon-feeding soft finger foods and a cup of water at all meals so that your baby develops all their feeding skills

8. Stop feeding when your baby shows you he or she has had enough by keeping his mouth closed or turning away from food or milk

9. Introduce allergenic foods one at a time, from four to six months dairy foods (cow’s milk, yogurt, cheese), egg, nut butters, fish, wheat-based foods and foods with soya or sesame

10. Move onto thick mash with soft lumps between six and eight months and onto minced and chopped family foods and firm finger foods between nine and 12 months.

HOW TO AVOID JAUNDICE DURING PREGNANCY.

Jaundice is the result of a raised level of bilirubin, a yellow pigment by-product that results when red blood cells break down.

Baby's immature liver is unable to clear the excess buildup of bilirubin fast enough causing it to accumulate in the blood. For a newborn baby, the condition is common.

Every pregnant woman should see this.
HOW TO FLUSH TOXINS THAT LEAD TO JAUNDICE OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM.

Regularly incorporate pears, apples, grapes, and pineapples into your diet. Also, citrus fruits such as oranges help prevent the production of bilirubin. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

This will flush toxins that lead to jaundice out of your system. Coconut juice and barley water also, help eliminate toxins from your body.

HOW TO AVOID JAUNDICE DURING PREGNANCY.
We educate Pregnant women in our hospital to do the following and more.

A healthy diet filled with green leafy vegetables can help prevent jaundice.

Regular exercise and sleep enhance the effects of a healthy diet.

Excessive amounts of caffeine and sugar can affect your liver and cause jaundice. Limit your intake of soda, tea, coffee, and other beverages that contain caffeine or artificial sweeteners.

Processed foods, saturated fat, and fried foods can stress your liver, possibly leading to jaundice. Eat whole foods whenever possible and limit fatty meats. a diet high in meats disrupts your digestive system.

Avoid excessive activity as this may cause fatigue which may result in you going into early labor. One risk factor for jaundice is premature labor.

Just in case you know anyone victim of Jaundice, at Gilead Children Hospital Abagana our doctors have exceptional experience in managing such patients and educating the Parents.

Most sicknesses can be prevented, don't wait for them to mature into a more complicated issue. Gilead Children Hospital Abagana is there to assist healthy living for Adults and especially Children.

Things to do during pregnancy.

1. Take folic acid and vitamin D supplements
Folic acid significantly reduces your baby’s risk of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida.

If you are pregnant, start taking 400 micrograms of folic acid as a supplement as soon as possible until the end of the first trimester (week 12 of your pregnancy).

2. Eat well
Having a balanced diet and eating well during pregnancy means having a good variety of foods, such as fruit and vegetable, meat, cheese, potatoes, beans and pulses. This will ensure you have the energy and nutrients you and your baby need during pregnancy.

If you feel you are struggling to follow a healthy diet during pregnancy, ask your midwife or GP for support. They might be able to refer you to a dietitian to help you.

3. Stay active
Staying active during pregnancy is great for you and your baby. It can help you sleep better, reduce anxiety and help you stay healthy through pregnancy.

If you were active before you became pregnant, you can continue at the same level. But listen to your body and slow down if you begin to feel uncomfortable. If you didn’t exercise much before you became pregnant, build up slowly and aim for 30 minutes each day.

4. Avoid diving or playing contact sports
Most exercise is safe and healthy to continue during pregnancy. But there are some activities you should not do.

5. Monitor your baby’s movements
Feeling your baby move is a sign that they are well. You usually start to feel your baby moving when you’re between 18 and 24 weeks. If this is your first baby, you might not feel movements until after 20 weeks.

The movements can feel like a gentle swirling or fluttering. As your pregnancy progresses, you may feel kicks and jerky movements.

Get to know your baby’s pattern of movements and contact your midwife or maternity unit immediately if you think these have slowed down, stopped or changed. You should feel your baby move right up to and during labour.

6. Go to sleep on your side in the third trimester
Our advice is to go sleep on your side in the third trimester because research has shown that this is safer for your baby. This includes night sleep and daytime naps. If you wake up on your back, try not to worry, just settle back to sleep on your side.

7. Consider having vaccinations that are offered
You’ll be offered vaccinations during pregnancy.

Constant medical attention and examination is of high essence.
You Can always reach out to us at Gilead Children Hospital Abagana

First Aid Tips for Common Playground Accidents

It's a beautiful day with plenty of sunshine. It's a perfect day for the kids to be outside playing. But, in the blink of an eye, this scene can change from having happy, smiling children playing to one where children are crying. What can make this change quickly is any one of many typical playground problems such as a nosebleed, sunburn, or any potential issue.

Emergencies can occur at any time around the playground. Regardless of the severity, the important thing for any parent or teacher is how to react to the emergency. The vast majority of outdoor accidents can be treated by an adult. Simpler issues such as sunburn, dehydration, and nosebleeds can be addressed on the spot. However, more complex problems stemming from animal bites, sprains, or breaks should be looked at by a medical professional to ensure that the problem is addressed properly.

However, people need to know how to handle these emergencies themselves and when to seek medical attention. To help identify and properly treat these playground emergencies, we have consulted with several medical professionals.

Follow our post for tips and nuggets to manage this emergency.
Gilead Children Hospital Abagana is committed to ensuring children's well-being is guaranteed.
