Common Menstrual Colors & What They Mean

1. Bright Red
• Fresh blood, healthy flow
• Usually appears on the first day of your period
• Normal and shows good uterine blood flow

2. Dark Red or Brown
• Old blood leaving the uterus
• Often appears at the end of your period
• Normal, unless accompanied by clots or foul odor

3. Pink
• Blood mixed with cervical fluid
• Can appear at the start or end of your period
• Usually normal, but excessive pink spotting between periods may signal hormonal imbalance

4. Orange
• Blood mixed with cervical fluids or infection
• Could indicate bacterial vaginosis
• See a doctor if accompanied by smell or discomfort

5. Gray
• Could be a sign of infection or retained tissue
• Often comes with foul smell
• Needs medical attention immediately

6. Black
• Very old blood slowly leaving the uterus
• Usually normal if at the start or end of period
• Persistent black blood outside period may need checking
