As we enter the blessed seasons of Ramadan and Lent, one of the most common questions we receive from our bariatric patients is “Can I fast?”
Fasting is deeply spiritual and meaningful for many people. But after bariatric surgery, your body has different nutritional needs, and fasting must be approached carefully and thoughtfully.
Who may be able to fast?
- Patients who are 12–18 months post-surgery
- Those with stable weight and no nutritional deficiencies
- Patients who tolerate solid foods well and stay well hydrated
- Those cleared by their bariatric surgeon and dietitian
Who should avoid fasting?
- Patients in the first year after surgery
- Anyone with ongoing vomiting, reflux, or dumping symptoms
- Patients with anemia, low vitamins, or protein deficiency
- Diabetics with unstable blood sugar
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
When is it safer to fast?
If medically cleared, fasting may be considered once your weight stabilizes and your labs are normal. Preparation is key, adjusting meal timing, protein intake, hydration and supplements is essential.
Important reminders during fasting:
• Prioritize protein, avoid high-sugar foods, hydrate gradually between sunset and dawn, never skip your prescribed vitamins and stop fasting immediately if you feel dizzy, weak, faint, or unwell.
Remember that many religious teachings allow exemptions for medical reasons, and your wellbeing comes first.
Ramadan Mubarak and Happy Lenten Season to you all!
