FIVE WAY TO PREVENT PEPTIC ULCER DISEASES ARE;
1. Practice good hygiene to prevent H. pylori infection: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a common bacterium that can infect the stomach lining and is a major cause of peptic ulcers. To prevent infection, ensure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating and after using the toilet. Ensure your food is properly cooked and your drinking water is from a clean source.
2. Use NSAIDs cautiously: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin and ibuprofen can irritate the stomach lining and increase the risk of ulcers. Use these medications at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time. If you need to take NSAIDs regularly, discuss potential risks and preventive strategies with your Pharmacist/ doctor, such as taking them with food or considering alternative pain relievers like acetaminophen (paracetamol).
3.Limit or avoid alcohol consumption: Excessive alcohol intake can erode the protective mucous lining of the stomach and increase acid production, making the stomach more susceptible to ulcers. Moderation or abstinence from alcohol is advisable.
4. Quit smoking: Smoking damages the stomach lining, increases stomach acid production, and reduces the effectiveness of ulcer treatment. Quitting smoking significantly lowers the risk of developing peptic ulcers and promotes healing if you already have one.
5. Manage stress: While stress may not directly cause ulcers, it can worsen ulcer symptoms and potentially increase stomach acid. Employ stress-reducing techniques such as exercise, meditation, yoga, spending time on hobbies, and ensuring adequate sleep to promote overall well-being and potentially reduce the impact of stress on your digestive health.
