Hepatitis Key Facts!

1. There are 5 viruses that predominantly affect the liver…hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E.

They are all different viruses and are transmitted through different pathways. Hepatitis A and E are mostly spread through faecal-oral route and are preventable by hand hygiene and careful food preparation. Hepatitis A is common and is also vaccine preventable. Hepatitis B is spread through blood and body fluids, hepatitis C through blood to blood contact. Hepatitis D only occurs in people infected with hepatitis B and is uncommon.

2. There are over 300 million people in the world that live with viral hepatitis
Less than 20% of the people with the virus are aware that they have the infection. The prevalence rates of hepatitis vary throughout the world, some areas have high rates of hepatitis B of over 10%.

3. More than 1.5 million people die each year from viral hepatitis
Many people are unaware of their diagnosis until the very late stages of disease and are often too late to be saved. Causes of death include acute liver failure, but the most common cause of death is liver cancer. Described as a ‘silent killer’, those unaware of their status may only have symptoms when the disease is very advanced and when options of treatment are very limited. It’s important to know your status!

4. Prevention of hepatitis remains central in eliminating viral hepatitis
Vaccines are available for both hepatitis B and for hepatitis A. It is safe for people of any age to have, even when pregnant. All people should be vaccinated. Know your status and get vaccinated if you are not protected. Those who are family members or partners of positive patients can access free vaccines through Nixogene Healthcare Ltd. Just contact us.

5. Hepatitis B and hepatitis C are transmitted through blood
Avoid sharing IV needles/syringes, razor blades and toothbrushes. It is safe to share meals, hug your family and friends. Stigma and discrimination is not acceptable. Talk to us if you have any concerns.

6. Hepatitis B, C, and D can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer
Many people can continue to have a healthy and normal life without realising their liver is being damaged. It is essential that, if you are at risk, you see your doctor regularly and get checkups. Taking care of yourself is also very important, in addition to getting vaccinated, avoid excess alcohol and do not smoke, take care not to take medications that can cause liver injury. Focus on a healthy diet, exercise and stay lean.

7. Hepatitis B can be treated
Treatment, for those who require it, is available in the form of an oral tablet. If you are living with hepatitis B, we will assess whether you need treatment based on blood tests, your history and other test results. Even if you do not need treatment, you may need treatment later. Lifelong checkups are needed.

8. Hepatitis C can be cured
Confirmed with a PCR test

9. Beware immune suppression
If you have a medical condition that requires immune suppression, you may be at risk of hepatitis B reactivation (meaning an increase in virus activity in the liver). Know your status and ask your doctor.

10. People with viral hepatitis can be at increased risk of liver cancer
Screening can lead to early detection and curative treatment. Liver cancer is the most common cause of death in patients with hepatitis B. It is asymptomatic and the only way to diagnose it early is by screening. If you have hepatitis B, you need screening. This is simple, using an ultrasound on a six-monthly basis. It could save your life. High risk groups include older people, those with advanced disease (liver cirrhosis) and a family history of liver cancer. Treatment is available.

Bronchopneumonia:
Symptoms, Risk Factors, and Treatment
Definition:
Pneumonia is a category of lung infections. It occurs when viruses, bacteria, or fungi cause inflammation and infection in the alveoli (tiny air sacs) in the lungs. Bronchopneumonia is a type of pneumonia that causes inflammation in the alveoli.
Someone with bronchopneumonia may have trouble breathing because their airways are constricted. Due to inflammation, their lungs may not get enough air.

Symptoms of bronchopneumonia in adults and children.
Symptoms of bronchopneumonia may be like other types of pneumonia. This condition often begins with flu-like symptoms that can become more severe over a few days. The symptoms include:
Fever
A cough that brings up mucus
Shortness of breath
Chest pain
Rapid breathing
Sweating
Chills
Headaches
Muscle aches
Pleurisy, or chest pain that results from inflammation due to excessive coughing
Fatigue
Confusion or Delirium, especially in older people.

Symptoms in children
Children and infants may display symptoms differently. While coughing is the most common symptom in infants, they may also have:
A rapid heart rate
Low blood oxygen levels
Retractions of chest muscles
Irritability
Decreased interest in feeding, eating, or drinking
Fever
Congestion
Difficulty sleeping
Visit us at Nixogene Healthcare Ltd Abuja if you have symptoms of pneumonia. It’s impossible to know which type of pneumonia you have without a thorough exam.

Risk Factors for developing bronchopneumonia:
Age: People who are 65 years of age or older, and children who are 2 years or younger, have a higher risk for developing bronchopneumonia and complications from the condition.
Environment: People who work in, or often visit, hospital or nursing home facilities have a higher risk for developing bronchopneumonia.
Lifestyle: Smoking, poor nutrition, and a history of heavy alcohol use can increase your risk for bronchopneumonia.
DIAGNOSIS
Only a doctor can diagnose bronchopneumonia. Your doctor will begin by conducting a physical exam and asking about your symptoms.
Doctor may also send you for tests to rule out other possible causes that could lead to similar symptoms. Other conditions include bronchitis, bronchial asthma, or lobar pneumonia. The tests may include:
CT Scan of the Chest
Chest X ray
Full Blood Count, etc
Talk to us if you notice any of the aforementioned

Ask your body what it really needs; I try to start each weekend thinking about what my body really needs and commit to giving it that throughout the weekend.

If you’ve been stuck at a desk all week, your body likely needs movement. If you’ve been hitting the workouts super hard all throughout the week, your body likely needs rest and recovery.

If you’ve been super busy with work, meetings, and other activities, you likely need some alone time, and if you’ve been alone in your cubicle all week, you likely need some connection.

If you’ve been burning the midnight oil, your body likely needs sleep.

If you’ve had a tough week, you may need fun, laughter, or family time.

If you’ve been frustrated at work, maybe you need to feel accomplished (a new, tough workout is a great way!)

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT...

Over the years, occupational hazards across the world have been on a steady increase, making it a cause for serious concern and attention. Most people spend all their productive hours at work, trying to earn a living. The average Nigerian in the corporate sector spends at least 7 or 8 hours at work everyday. Those in the informal sector spend more than that as working conditions for them are not streamlined and defined. Therefore, the issue of safety at the work place is paramount as safety at workplace incorporates the health and security of the employee. Providing immediate and effective first aid to workers or others who have been injured or become ill at the workplace may reduce the severity of the injury or illness and promote recovery. In some cases it could mean the difference between life and death.

How Do You Get Hepatitis C?
Hepatitis C is a blood-borne illness, meaning it is transmitted via contact with infected blood. Usually the virus enters the body through a puncture wound on the skin.

Is Hepatitis C Contagious?
Yes, hepatitis C is contagious. The most common way hepatitis C is transmitted is via injection drug use. Sharing needles with someone who is infected can transmit hepatitis C. Health care professionals may contract the virus via needlestick injury. Prior to 1992, the U.S. blood supply was not screened the way it is today, so some people contracted hepatitis C from infected blood transfusions. Rarely, babies born to hepatitis C-infected mothers acquire the virus. Hepatitis C can also be spread by having s*x with an infected person or sharing personal items (a razor or toothbrush) with someone who has the virus, but these cases are rare.
