FOREIGN BODY SENSATION AND CORNEA ABRASION

FOREIGN BODY SENSATION in an Eye is a sensation that makes you feel as if a sand is in your eye.

Causes:
1) Dry eye

2) Trichiasis or an eyelash/ hair

3) Corneal Abrasion/erosion.

The important thing to note is, Dry eye or hair strand is not always the cause of foreign body sensation. Rather, a more serious case as CORNEA ABRASION could be the reason of foreign body sensation. Recall that the CORNEA is that black portion in an eye. So, if the black of the eye is wounded, it is called CORNEA EROSION, CORNEA ABRASION OR CORNEA LACERATION. such condition, if ignored, could lead to CORNEA ULCER, hence, visual impairment.

DOES DRINKING GARRI CAUSE BLINDNESS?

This question is commonly asked by people.

Cassava roots contain a poisonous substance called CYANIDE. However, this cyanide is reduced when the processing of the cassava to garri is well carried out by pressing it in the bag and leaving it dried for about three days or more before frying.

It is common that some people don't let it dry well before processing, in order to process faster and sell for quick profits. Such garri, if taken by what we call -to drink garri- may gradually lead to visual loss/blindness due to the cyanide. This is called TOXIC AMBLYOPIA.

Since we may not know how the garri we buy are processed, and you like drinking garri regularly, it is advisable that we buy the ones fried with palm-oil. The oil neutralizes the cyanide and make it safe for drinking.

EYE SENSITIVITY TO LIGHT.

When you feel a combination of your eyes' sensitivity to LIGHT, PAINS and TEARING, it's due to stimulation of one of your nerves called TRIGEMINAL NERVE

CAUSES: It could be due to:

1) EPIDERMIC KERATOCONJUCTIVITIS, or conjunctivitis due to virus.

2) CONGENITAL GLAUCOMA

3) ETC (other conditions).

In such feelings, visit a standard eye clinic to prevent eye complications.

DRY EYE.

Dry eye occurs when the eye does not produce enough tear film or disruption of the tear film.

Tear film is the film that lubricates the eye, and not the water that flows out of the eye or drips down the lower lid. They are different.

SYMPTOMS OF DRY EYE MAY INCLUDE:

1. foreign body sensation, feeling as if there is sand or eye lash in your eye.

2. Stingy or burning sensation.

3. Water flowing out of the eye.

4. Red eye.

5. Sensitivity to light.

6. Blur vision.

7. Excessive Exposure to light, like those who are always on computer or phone screens. This is why such people need the photochromic or bluecut lenses.

8. Age: Although this can occur at any age, but its more common fron 40 and above.

9. Etc.

COMPLICATIONS AND DANGERS OF DRY EYE IF LEFT UNTREATED.

1. Corneal ulcer. The cornea is the black eye. Therefore, corneal ulcer means melting of the black eye, secondary to pathogens. This is very dangerous.

2. Cornea scaring. This can be seen as the black eye appearing whitish colour or apaque and this leads to impaired vision.

3. Corneal infection. This is infection of the black eye.

4. Keratitis. This is inflammation of the black eye.

5. Blindness. This occurs when the black eye is damaged due to dry eye.

Visit a standard eye clinic when you experience any of these or any discomfort in your vision.

BLUNT TRAUMA

Blunt trauma is a forceful impact to the eye. Examples: when a hand blow, slaps, punch, or a ball hits the eye without a pe*******on that leads to eye bleeding. Some of these things are experienced in even fighting or when playing football or other games.

When this happens, the affected eye may swell, turn red or accompanied with pains.

Most of the affected persons end up in pharmacies and are given eye drops like chloramphenicol or others.

After a few days, the person may be relieved of the symptoms; but is it always the end?

After a few months or years, most blunt traumas result to CATARACT, GLAUCOMA or RETINAL DETACHMENTS.

Therefore, rather than just ending up with eye drops gotten from pharmacies, it is advisable for patients of history of blunt trauma to visit a standard Eye clinic for comprehensive eye test in order to monitor cataract, glaucoma and retinal detachment.

What is Amblyopia (Lazy eye)?

Amblyopia, also known as Lazy eye, is a condition in which the brain fails to recognize an object seen by the eye. It is common in one eye and may also occur in both eyes.

It occurs in kids and could be best treated before the child hits 7years.
