What causes symptoms like:
1. Floaters
2. seeing curtain in front of the eye.
3. Sensation of Flashes of light
4. Reduced vision?

sometimes, the above complaints are due to RETINAL DETACHMENT.

Such conditions should not be ignored and requires an extensive examination from a qualified eye doctor because it's a case of emergency.

What are the causes of retinal detachment? They are caused by:

1) Family history/hereditary.

2) Trauma: trauma could be by a blow or slap in the eye during fight or disagreement that happened a few years or months ago. Trauma could also be by football, tenis ball, basket ball or other balls that hit the eye in a sports or game that happened in the past. Infact, any physical trauma/impact on the eye may result to retinal detachment after a few years

3) Ageing

4) short-sightedness

5) certain diseases like diabetes.

6) etc.

Treatment of retinal detachment is usually expensive and may run into millions of naira. Therefore, early detection is valuable.

Visit a standard eye clinic for examination.

Have You ever noticed that you sometimes feel a bitter taste in your throat after you instill Chloramphenicol eyedrop or any other eyedrop? The reason is, there exists a passage that links from the eye to the throat. That passage is called NASOLACRIMAL DUCT. This Nasolacrimal duct is the passage through which tears or any liquid in our eyes flows through to our throats

Atimes, a blockage in that passage could occur. When it happens, it is called NASOLACRIMAL DUCT STENOSIS. In stenosis, the tears is obstructed due to the passage blockage and the effect is overflowing of tears and such patients feel excessive tearing.

The point is, it is not only dry eyes or corneal issues that lead to tearing. Stenosis (nasolacrimal duct blockage) also lead to excessive tearing and this could pose a more serious problem.

Therefore, in a case of tearing, don't conclude it's dry eyes. Instead, visit a standard eye clinic for proper investigation.

FOREIGN BODY SENSATION AND CORNEA ABRASION

FOREIGN BODY SENSATION in an Eye is a sensation that makes you feel as if a sand is in your eye.

Causes:
1) Dry eye

2) Trichiasis or an eyelash/ hair

3) Corneal Abrasion/erosion.

The important thing to note is, Dry eye or hair strand is not always the cause of foreign body sensation. Rather, a more serious case as CORNEA ABRASION could be the reason of foreign body sensation. Recall that the CORNEA is that black portion in an eye. So, if the black of the eye is wounded, it is called CORNEA EROSION, CORNEA ABRASION OR CORNEA LACERATION. such condition, if ignored, could lead to CORNEA ULCER, hence, visual impairment.

Visit a standard eye clinic when you have such feeling.

DOES DRINKING GARRI CAUSE BLINDNESS?

This question is commonly asked by people.

Cassava roots contain a poisonous substance called CYANIDE. However, this cyanide is reduced when the processing of the cassava to garri is well carried out by pressing it in the bag and leaving it dried for about three days or more before frying.

It is common that some people don't let it dry well before processing, in order to process faster and sell for quick profits. Such garri, if taken by what we call -to drink garri- may gradually lead to visual loss/blindness due to the cyanide. This is called TOXIC AMBLYOPIA.

Since we may not know how the garri we buy are processed, and you like drinking garri regularly, it is advisable that we buy the ones fried with palm-oil. The oil neutralizes the cyanide and make it safe for drinking.
