WAVA Participates in the “Love Me Some Period” 2025 World Menstrual Hygiene Day Outreach

Last Wednesday, May 28, 2025, WAVA supported the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and Foundation on the “Love Me Some Period” outreach to commemorate World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

The outreach team visited three secondary schools in Abuja: School for the Gifted in Gwagwalada, Government Secondary School Kabusa, and Federal Science and Technical College Orozo, reaching over a thousand adolescent girls.

Key highlights were the menstrual hygiene education and mental health awareness, distribution of 600 sanitary pads and other menstrual health products, as well as distribution of the "Embrace Your Mind" Mental Health Guide.

This campaign’s success was made possible through the strategic support of other invaluable partners including Tiko, D Future Foundation Mental Health for Youth Initiative, Pads for Her Initiative, Nation First Foundation and other organizations.

WAVA remains committed to supporting adolescent and youth-focused campaigns that promote the health and well-being of Nigerian youth because we believe that when our girls have the right information and support, they become empowered to take charge of their health.

WAVA Partners with C-WINS for Strategic Advocacy Visit Ahead of Measles & Rubella Vaccine Rollout

On Wednesday, 4 June 2025, Women Advocates for Vaccine Access (WAVA) joined the Centre for Well-being and Integrated Nutrition Solutions (C-WINS) on an advocacy visit to the Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev’d Henry C. Ndukuba, represented by Venerable Archdeacon Dr. Olayemi Fatusi.

The visit was part of a collaborative effort to raise awareness about the Measles and Rubella vaccine rollout scheduled for October 2025. Recognizing the Church’s strong community presence and moral authority, discussions explored opportunities for partnership in promoting vaccine awareness, particularly among underserved populations.

Key Highlights from the Visit Include:

• Identification of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) as a powerful ally in driving vaccine education and mobilization efforts.

• Civil society organizations emphasized the importance of the Church’s role in sensitizing its members about the MR vaccination campaign.

Venerable Dr. Fatusi affirmed the Church’s support and proposed leveraging upcoming events, such as the National Medical Summit and National Church Meeting, as platforms to strengthen awareness.

At WAVA, we recognize that improving vaccine access requires collaboration with trusted community leaders. Partnering with religious institutions like the Anglican Church helps ensure accurate information reaches communities, and we remain committed to promoting informed participation and equitable access to vaccines.

WAVA Commits to Supporting PECCiN at Official Launch in Abuja

On Tuesday, 3 June 2025, WAVA joined national partners and stakeholders at the launch of the Partnership to Eliminate Cervical Cancer in Nigeria (PECCiN), held at A*o Villa in Abuja.

The initiative, led by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and coordinated by the National Task Force on Cervical Cancer Elimination (NTF-CCE), aims to accelerate Nigeria’s implementation of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) 90-70-90 targets

PECCiN focuses on multi-sectoral action to prevent, screen, and treat cervical cancer through sustained coordination, resource mobilisation, and expanded service delivery.

At WAVA, we recognize the urgency of eliminating cervical cancer and proudly support this national movement. We commend the commitment of Nigeria’s 36 state governors, who have pledged to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030 and endorsed PECCiN as a unified response.

WAVA is committed to contributing meaningfully by:
• Leveraging our ongoing projects to conduct evidence-based advocacy targeting key stakeholders, ensuring sustained access to HPV vaccination
• Strengthening public awareness of the benefits of HPV screening and early treatment by promoting social accountability across all our platforms

Cervical cancer is preventable, and with collective action, it is possible to eliminate it. WAVA is ready to do its part.

WAVA Commits to Supporting the FMYD’s Yo! Health Initiative

WAVA was privileged to attend the launch of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development’s Yo! Health Initiative held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja on Thursday, 15th May 2025.

The event, led by Honorable Minister Comrade Ayodele Olawande, brought together the Federal Ministries of Health and Women Affairs, civil society groups, development partners, the private sector, youth organizations, and students within the adolescent age group. The event featured the launch of Yo! Health Initiative products:

"Embrace Your Mind" Mental Health Guide
Mental Health & Substance Abuse Helpline
Mental Health & Menstrual Hygiene Campaign

The Minister highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing growing health concerns among young people. The Yo! Health Initiative focuses on providing access to credible health information, encouraging preventive healthcare, and promoting mental, sexual, and physical well-being. It is built on six strategic pillars: Mental Health; Alcohol, Drug, and Substance Abuse; Communicable Diseases; Health Insurance; Non-Communicable Diseases; and Sexual and Reproductive Health (M.A.C.H.I.N.S). The minister also stated that these pillars are guided by four core goals: raising awareness, empowering youth, advocacy and policy influence, and co-design and implementation (R.E.A.D).

Key highlights of the launch included ministerial commitments, strategic dialogues, and a panel discussion on intersectoral collaboration for youth health.

WAVA pledges her full support to this important initiative aimed at advancing the health and well-being of the Nigerian youth.

This , we urge all Nigerians to unite to protect our children and communities. Now is the time to reinvest in proven tools like insecticide-treated nets and antimalarial medications.

In Kebbi and Bayelsa States, we urge families with children aged 5 to 11 months to take advantage of the free malaria vaccines at their nearest primary health care centre by completing the full four-dose series to ensure protection.

We must also reimagine our approach to reach every child, especially in high-burden and hard-to-reach areas.

Equally important, we must reignite a strong financial commitment to sustain and expand these lifesaving efforts.

Malaria is preventable, curable, and within our reach to eliminate. Our collective action will protect our children, safeguard our communities, and drive us to a malaria-free future for Nigeria.

Meningitis is serious but preventable. Protect yourself and others by practicing good hygiene, covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, avoiding crowded places and close contact with infected individuals.

Most importantly, get vaccinated! It is the best preventive measure you can take to protect yourself.
