Labelling is process of assigning a descriptive term or category to a person, behavior or group. This can be based on physical appearance, behaviors, social roles or identities
In the context of individual with special needs, labeling often involves terms related to their disabilities or developmental conditions.
Labeling can either be Negative or positive
Bad labeling of individual with special needs can have numerous detrimental effects on
* Bad labeling of person with special needs can affect his/her Self Esteem and Self Image
* Bad labeling can have effects on Emotional and Mental Health of the individual with special needs
*Social Relationship - bad labels can affect how others perceive and interact with the individual, this can lead to social exclusion, bullying and difficulty in forming healthy relationships.
* Behavioral issues
Individuals who are negatively labeled might exhibit behavioral issues as a response to the frustrations and stress caused by these labels
* Educational and Professional Opportunities
Negative labels can influence teacher’s and employers expectations. The individual may be under estimated and not given the support and opportunities they need to succeed
* Identity and Development: Persistent negative labeling can impact the individual’s sense of identity and personal development. They might internalize the labels and struggle with forming a positive and independent self-identity.
Addressing these issues involves promoting positive and respectful language, fostering inclusive environments, and providing support to help individuals build confidence and resilience against negative labeling.
