YULETIDE: TINUBU APPROVES WAIVERS ON ROAD, RAIL TRANSPORT

To facilitate smooth holiday travel for citizens, President Bola Tinubu has granted approval for a 50% reduction in interstate transport fares and free train rides for Nigerians travelling between December 21, 2023, and January 4, 2024.

Dele Alake, Chairman of the inter-ministerial committee on presidential intervention, disclosed this announcement at the A*o Rock Villa.

The federal government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation, will coordinate efforts with transporters, road transport unions, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation to ensure the successful implementation of this special presidential initiative. He adds that air travel is not included in this initiative, as the focus is solely on benefiting the masses.

The Minister of Transportation clarified that the intervention specifically addresses luxurious buses operating on 22 designated routes during this period.

The National Union of Road Transport Workers has urged the Federal Government to fast-track the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas-powered buses.

The union stated that an adequate implementation of the scheme would cushion the effect of the removal of subsidy.

President Bola Tinubu in July promised to acquire and distribute 3,000 CNG-fuelled buses across the states and local governments for mass transit at an affordable rate.

Also, the Minister of Finance and Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, in a statement on Thursday, said with the introduction of the CNG vehicles, Nigerians would pay less for transportation.

What the government should do is that they should try and hasten the processes towards getting the buses. They said they want to acquire 3,000 buses nationwide, which is a far cry from the number of passengers all over Nigeria.

Supporting Edun’s view in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, the NURTW spokesperson, Segun Falade, said though the 3,000 vehicles were far less than the population, the government should hasten the process of making them available.

He said, “CNG buses are alternatives that can help ease the effect of the subsidy removal especially as it relates to the current cost of fuel against the CNG.

NURTW alone has more than three million transporters. Three thousand buses will be a far cry. However, the beauty of it all is the percentage of which such buses will be acquired; nine per cent is not bad.

Speaking further, he said, “I would advise that they should put measures in place to have a very broad base training so that most users will have the leverage to make good use of the buses. So, the rate of fatality will be reduced.

“I would also advise that the Federal Government should find a way to hasten towards getting the buses. From what I read, procurement will be around March to August 2024 which is too far off. The buses should be increased from the meagre 3,000 even if it’s in phases.

“They should try and get close to 10,000 buses for Nigerians, and commercial drivers should be supported with adequate training.”

The National Union of Road Transport Workers on Saturday confirmed the arrest of its National President, Tajudeen Baruwa, and three other executives.

The union also confirmed the sealing off of its national secretariat located in Garki 2, Abuja.

It said the president and three other officials were arrested on the premises of the secretariat on Friday at 5pm when armed policemen and operatives of the Department of State Services invaded the building and asked all the occupants to leave.

The Deputy President of the union, Isa Ore, who confirmed the development while addressing journalists, said he was surprised by the development as the security agents did not give any reason for their action.

He said the union was preparing for the inauguration and swearing-in of the newly elected members of the National Administrative Council when the police arrived, ordered the workers to vacate and sealed off the premises.

“We were shocked to see the policemen in their numbers locking our secretariat without giving a reason. Today (Saturday), we were preparing for the inauguration and swearing-in of the newly elected National Administrative Council members but we just saw police and they asked us to leave the premises.

“They said it was an order from above and they have detained our president and other leaders at the Wuse Police Station. I have called the FCT Commissioner of Police but he said he was not in town,” Ore added.

He said others arrested and currently being detained at the Wuse Zone 3 Division were the General Secretary, Anthony Chukudi; National Trustee, Olayi Odion, and Principal Assistant Secretary, Abdulrasak Yemi.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, has said he will be meeting with the officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to look into mitigating the effects of petrol scarcity for transportation of electoral materials and officials on election day.

Mr Yakubu disclosed this on Tuesday when he met with the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to finalise the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the transport union in December.

INEC partners the NURTW and Marine Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) to ease movement of materials and officials on the election day.

But the commission worries that the shortage of petroleum products being experienced across the country could affect logistical operations on election day.

“The truth is that our arrangements may be negatively affected by the non-availability of products,” he said.

“For this reason, the Commission will this afternoon meet with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to look into ways to ameliorate the situation.

“I wish to assure Nigerians that we will continue to engage every national institution for the success of the 2023 General Election.”

He said Tuesday’s meeting with the executives of the transport workers was to put finishing touches to the implementation of the signed MoU and to conclude on the modalities for the certification of vehicles by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Fuel Scarcity: INEC meets NNPCL on availability of products for election logistics

He said Tuesday’s meeting with the executives of the transport workers was to put finishing touches to the implementation of the signed MoU and to conclude on the modalities for the certification of vehicles by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

“The issue of logistics has been a perennial problem in election administration in Nigeria. That is why for three electoral cycles now, INEC has collaborated with the road transport unions to address the problem,” he said.

The plan, he said, is for materials and officials to arrive at the venue of elections before voters and not the other way round. “We believe that this is achievable.”

He said the commission has communicated the specifications of vehicles needed and the locations to the unions.

“Vehicles conveying personnel and materials will not travel long distances. In fact, all movements should be within a state and preferably within local government areas. There should be no inter-state movement.
