A study from the University of Leeds highlights the profound impact fathers can have on their children’s academic success. Researchers found that when fathers actively read, play, and spend time with their kids, even for just 10 minutes a day, children show measurable improvements in learning, focus, and overall school performance. These small daily interactions provide emotional support, strengthen bonds, and create a stimulating environment for cognitive growth.

Engaging in play and reading together helps develop essential skills such as language comprehension, problem-solving, and critical thinking. It also encourages curiosity, creativity, and confidence, allowing children to approach challenges in school with greater resilience and motivation. Fathers’ involvement positively influences social development as well, promoting empathy, communication, and emotional regulation.

Importantly, this study emphasizes that quality matters more than quantity. Even brief, consistent periods of meaningful interaction can boost a child’s learning potential and long-term academic outcomes. Creating daily routines—reading a story before bedtime, playing educational games, or simply talking about the day—can make a significant difference in children’s cognitive and emotional development.

Encouraging fathers to actively participate in their children’s daily lives not only supports school performance but also fosters stronger family relationships. These small investments of time yield lifelong benefits, helping kids thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Is screen time really delaying your child’s speech?
Many parents rely on cartoons like Ms. Rachel or Cocomelon, and that’s okay in moderation. But language doesn’t grow from watching, it grows from interaction.
When children spend too much time on screens, they lose those small back-and-forth moments that actually build speech and connection.
Watch this before you hand over the tablet again.

Don't forget, you can also book a consultation to understand your child's needs better by sending a DM. We have a wide range of solutions you can explore.

This was how my 4-year-old client with autism and I started our therapy session today. Let's call him Billy (not real name)

Me: Hey Billy, let’s watch something before we start work.

Billy: I want something nice.

Me: Like what?

Billy: (pause, no response)

Me: Do you want Barney or Goldilocks?

Billy: I want Barney.

Now, you see what I did there? 😊
I helped him fill in the blanks by offering a structured choice. Instead of leaving him stuck, I gave him two simple options and he confidently chose the one that was highly preferred.

Why is this important?
1. It reduces frustration.
2. It gives the child a sense of control, which is very important for learning new skills.
3. Choosing a highly preferred activity makes the work that follows easier for everyone.

I'm really eager to see the new skills we can develop during this session.

Ever noticed how your child can stay focused on a video game for hours but loses interest in homework after 5 minutes? šŸŽ®āž”ļøšŸ“–

That’s because children learn best when the process feels enjoyable, when it connects to their interests.

Some children light up when you sing with them, others when they get stickers, high-fives, or even just extra playtime.

šŸ’” The more learning feels like what your child already enjoys, the faster it sticks.

This school season, pay attention to what excites your child — music, drawing, games, stories, or play — and share these ā€œlikesā€ with their teachers or therapists. It can make all the difference in how quickly they pick up new skills.

How do supplements relate to speech and language development/autism?

Many parents meet me and ask about supplements. Some have been told that a certain product will ā€œunlockā€ speech or even ā€œcureā€ autism.

Here’s the truth šŸ‘‡

āœ… Supplements can support the brain by providing important nutrients that help with focus, energy, and overall health.
āŒ But supplements alone cannot teach a child to talk, play, or interact.

Even if a child has a perfectly healthy brain, if nobody speaks to them, they will not learn to speak. Why? Because development is learned, not just biological. Skills like speech, social interaction, and self-control must be taught and practiced in daily life. That’s what therapy does.

Think of it like this:

Supplements = the fuel

Therapy = the driving lessons

One without the other leaves progress incomplete. Together, they give children the best chance at meaningful progress.

✨ Supplements support. Therapy teaches. Both matter — but therapy cannot be replaced.

🧠 Speech Delay or Language Disorder?
Not the same — and knowing the difference matters.

A speech delay might go away on its own…
But a language disorder won’t, it needs therapy or structured support.

Hmm insightful

To clarify, I'm not talking about tasks kids can and want to do, and that are developmentally appropriate for them. I'm referring to prematurely forced independence, which was super common a generation ago (and still to a large extent today). For example, making a child clean up their room when they're too little to do it without total overwhelm - this may manifest in adulthood who's "got everything covered" even when it's still, actually, quite overwhelming. Collaborative decision-making that's fluid works much better (just because I could do it yesterday doesn't mean I can today - or maybe today I'm ready when I wasn't yesterday). ✨
