A Blessing or a Curse?
Nigeria mourns. Arise News TV mourns. The journalism world mourns. A young, bright, courageous voice has been silenced far too soon.
Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a Nigerian also having a British citizenship and one of Arise News TV’s seasoned journalists, made a choice many would never dare to consider. She chose Nigeria, her Fatherland, over the comfort and safety of the United Kingdom. Despite her mother’s fervent pleas to remain abroad, she stood firm in her conviction: “I believe I have something to contribute to my fatherland.” I guess she probably thought.
Sommie, as she was fondly called, defied comfort. She chose service. She chose sacrifice. She returned not for fame, but for purpose. To tell stories that matter, to help build a better Nigeria, and to be part of a media movement that upholds truth and integrity. But in a cruel twist of fate, the very nation she came to serve failed her.
She was attacked in her Abuja home by armed robbers, a nightmare no citizen should endure, let alone someone who left everything behind to give back. Yet the tragedy deepened. Rushed to the hospital in critical condition, Sommie was met not with urgency, but with neglect. In a moment where every second counted, help was withheld.(So Sad!)
And so, Nigeria lost a daughter.
I ask again……..is it a blessing or a curse to serve one’s country with hope, only to be repaid with violence and neglect?
This is not just about one life lost. This is about a broken system……
A system that failed a patriot. A system that forces us to question the cost of loyalty, of love for country, of choosing service over self.
Sommie's story should not end in silence.
Her legacy must ignite change…...change in how we value life, how we respond to emergencies, how we protect those who protect our collective truth as a country.
Let us not forget her name.
Let us not forget her sacrifice.
And above all, let us not allow her death to be in vain.
I wish that your soul finds rest, Sommie Maduagwu!
