Alignment for Impact in Action 🤝

Over the course of two productive days, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, through the Department of the National Eye, Ear and Sensory Functions Health Programme (NESHP), convened a Government–Partners Coordination Workshop themed “Alignment for Impact.” The gathering brought together partners as one collective body, united by a shared commitment to improving eye, ear, and sensory health outcomes across Nigeria.

The workshop created a valuable space for open dialogue, collaboration, and reflection. Participants reviewed progress, shared insights from implementation, and aligned ongoing and planned interventions with national priorities, ensuring efforts are coordinated, efficient, and impactful.

A major focus of the discussions was budget alignment and financing, where partners jointly examined resource allocation, sustainability, and accountability. These conversations reinforced the importance of aligning partner support with government budgets to maximize impact, avoid duplication, and reach underserved communities more effectively.

Beyond strategy and funding, the workshop strengthened partnerships, reaffirmed shared responsibility, and emphasized data-driven planning and strong coordination as key drivers of success.

The conversations, connections, and commitments made over the two days reflect a collective resolve to work better, together.

As we move forward, the shared goal remains clear: aligned efforts, stronger partnerships, and measurable impact for eye, ear, and sensory health in Nigeria.

JigiBola 2.0-Strengthening Primary Eye Care: A Vision for Integrated Sensory Care

The National Eye Ear and Sensory Functions Health Programme (NESHP) National Coordinator, Dr Okolo Oteri Eme, lead her team and partners to the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) headquarters yesterday!
There she was warmly received by the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer Dr Muyi Aina

As the first point of access for many individuals, primary health care plays a vital role in early detection, prevention, referral, and equitable access to quality sensory health services. Through collaboration and knowledge sharing, we are reinforcing the importance of integrating eye care into primary health systems to advance inclusive, people-centred care.

The meeting focused on a critical mission: upcoming launch of the second phase of JigiBola 2.0 and closing the gaps in integrating Primary Eye Care into our national Primary Health Care (PHC) framework. For eye care to be truly universal, it must be accessible at the grassroots level.

Key Highlights of the Visit:
• Tackling Policy Gaps: Reviewing current health frameworks to ensure that eye care is legally and operationally mandated within the PHC "Minimum Service Package."
• Jigi-Bola 2.0: Deepening our collaboration with the Jigi-Bola 2.0 initiative to expand the reach of free eye examinations and corrective glasses to underserved communities.
• Digitization of Training: Transitioning Primary Eye Care (PEC) training for frontline health workers into digital and e-learning formats to ensure rapid, scalable, and standardized skill acquisition nationwide.
• Integration Strategy: Developing robust pathways to ensure vision screenings are a standard part of routine clinic visits.
• Screening of staff and provision of free spectacles: courtesy of Mr President, the NEHSHP also conducted vision screening for individuals aged 40 and above, with staff coming forward to have their eyes checked and getting free spectacles to improve their productivity in the workplace, including the Executive Director himself.

Together, we remain committed to building a healthier future where eye, ear, and sensory care is accessible to everyone, starting right from the community.

Why This Matters
By addressing policy hurdles and leveraging technology for training, we are removing the barriers that have historically kept eye health as a "luxury" service. We are ensuring that every Nigerian—regardless of their location—has access to the gift of sight. NPHCDA and the NESHP will be working hard at delivering PEC to Nigerians leveraging the flagship presidential initiative, JigiBola 2.0.
