Fire outbreaks are one of the most devastating catastrophes that can occur in any school/work environment.

Worse is when the fire occurs during working hours where there is an increased risk of physical injury and death.

Flame burns in our environment are usually worsned by the wrong first aid practices applied to them which often leads to contamination of wounds and prolonged healing time with scars.

A standard fire protocol is important for every school environment and both staff and students should know the drill by heart.

This will reduce the extent of lives and property lost especially in cases of small fires that occur in laboratories and class rooms.

Knowledge of appropriate first aid practises in case of fire can be the game changer in reducing morbidity and mortality from fire burns.

Knowledge and preparation always leads to less confusion in the face of any emergency.

Water is one of the most essential requirements for a healthy life.

Children are active and need water to maintain their metabolic activities.

Climate change has led to higher temperatures in the tropics leading to increased water requirements by people residing in these areas.

Having a source of clean potable water is one of the requirements for a healthy school environment.

Even if the parents supply water to children, every educational facility should have a system for supplying children with clear drinkable water to prevent dehydration , fainting spells and water born diseases in staff and students of the school.

Water is life.

Intentionality is everything.

One of the common investigations required for a medical certificate of fitness for most primary /secondary schools is the genotype of the child.

Genotype of a child is important because as a school administrator, you would want to know if you have a child with sickle cell anaemia in your facility.

Knowledge is power hence as a parent there is no reason to hide the genotype of your child from the school they attend.

A child who has an SS genotype will benefit from the following and more:

Frequent water breaks.

Less strenuous excercises with short periods of rest inbetween sports

Good ventilation

Close monitoring for pain symptoms

And a follow-up in the school clinic from time to time to ensure medications are regular.

A healthy school environment with freedom of interaction with colleagues and absence of stigmatisation is important for the mental health of these children and hence everything that can be done to give them a near-normal school experience should be done as this will help to maintain even their physical health.

The school can liase with the parents and health providers to ensure that child receives all routine care, follow -up and special vaccines with minimal interruption to their education.

Make efforts to find out the genotype of your child today and if per chance it is SS, engage the school authorities and their health providers to work out a plan that optimises the health of the child without putting their learning at risk.
