INCIDENT AT THE ABIRIBA COMMUNITY MEDICAL COMPLEX ON 25th AUGUST 2025

At about 8.05pm on 25th August 2025, two motorcycles arrived at the Abiriba Medical Complex carrying a young man soaked in blood who appeared lifeless. Staff at the Abiriba Community Medical Complex swung into action immediately. The doctor on call rushed to attend to the young man, the doctor observed venous blood with whitish substance oozing from his left ear and a deep laceration about 5cm long, not bleeding but exposing the skull bone of the left side of his forehead. After examination, the patient’s vitals were unrecordable, his chest was silent, he had no palpable pulse, no heart sounds and the pupils were fixed and widely dilated. The doctor confirmed that the young man was already dead, a case of brought-in dead (BID).

The friends of the young man, who accompanied him to hospital were informed that their friend was dead, they were in denial and argued that he was still alive because blood was still oozing out of his ears. The doctor tried to explain to them what the blood oozing out of the ear meant. However, they would not listen and insisted that the doctor should attend to their friend giving him intravenous fluids.

About ten minutes later, a female police officer arrived at the complex and requested to see the accident victim, as she had been called and informed that staff of the complex were refusing to treat the accident victim because they had not paid a deposit. The doctor took the police officer to see the co**se and repeated what he had already told the friends of the deceased. The doctor again restated that money was never an issue before treatment was administered at the medical complex, as hospital cards are free of any charges.

At this stage, a certain Mr. Obata, started recording a video where the co**se was, making inflammatory comments and spreading misinformation as to what truly transpired.

The matter escalated upon the arrival of several commercial motorcyclists popularly known as Okada riders, they threw stones protesting the death of their colleague destroying properties at the complex and attacking staff and patients at the complex. It took the intervention of the police and military to return things back to normalcy.

It is pertinent to note the information gathered relating to the accident from the deceased friends. It is our understanding that the accident occurred in Nkporo, the deceased was a lone rider on a motorcycle and had a head on collision with a trailer. It was gathered that the deceased was lying lifeless for some time at the scene of the accident before they alerted the Abiriba community. People from Abiriba then proceeded to the scene to retrieve the deceased and rush him to the complex.

We hope that this statement clarifies issues about the incident of 25 August 2025, and corrects the misinformation contained in the malicious video being circulated in the social media.

The Abiriba Community Medical Complex has always prioritized the wellbeing of our patients and will continue to do so.
