The Importance of Yearly Eye Check-Ups

Regular eye exams are essential for maintaining good eye health, detecting potential problems, and correcting vision issues. A yearly eye check-up can help prevent serious eye diseases, ensure clear vision, and even detect underlying health conditions.

Reasons to Have a Yearly Eye Check-Up:

1. Detect Eye Diseases Early: Many eye diseases, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration, can be treated more effectively if detected early. Regular eye exams can help identify these conditions before symptoms appear.

2. Correct Vision Problems: Yearly eye exams can help correct vision problems, such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia. Correcting these issues can improve daily life, from reading and driving to work and leisure activities.

3. Detect and Monitor Eye Health Issues: Regular eye exams can help detect and monitor eye health, especially for individuals with pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or family history of eye diseases.

4. Detect Other Health Issues: Eye exams can also detect underlying health conditions, such as Diabetes, Hypertensive, brain tumor, hyper and hypothyroidism.

5. *Maintain Clear Vision*: Regular eye exams can help ensure clear vision, which is essential for daily activities, work, and overall quality of life.

6. *Prevent Eye Injuries*: Yearly eye exams can help identify potential eye hazards, such as dry eyes or eye strain, which can increase the risk of eye injuries.

*Who Should Have a Yearly Eye Check-Up?*

- Children: Regular eye exams are essential for children's eye health, especially during school years.

- Adults: Yearly eye exams are recommended for adults, especially those with pre-existing conditions or family history of eye diseases.

- Seniors: Regular eye exams are crucial for seniors, as age-related eye diseases, such as cataracts and macular degeneration, become more common.

Have you noticed the intensity of the sun nowadays is on another level? What are the effects of this on our eyes?

The sun can have both short-term and long-term effects on our eyes. Here are some ways the sun can impact our vision:

Short-term effects:

1. Solar retinopathy: Directly looking at the sun can cause damage to the retina, leading to blind spots or vision loss.

2. Photokeratitis: UV radiation can cause inflammation of the cornea, leading to pain, redness, and blurred vision.

3. Eye strain: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause eye fatigue, dryness, and irritation.

Long-term effects:

1. Cataracts: UV radiation can contribute to the development of cataracts, a clouding of the lens in the eye.

2. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): UV exposure may increase the risk of AMD, a leading cause of vision loss in older adults.

3. Pterygium: UV radiation can cause the growth of a benign tumor on the conjunctiva, which can impair vision.

4. Eye cancer: UV exposure increases the risk of developing eye cancers, such as melanoma.

Prevention:
1. Wear sunglasses or photochromic lenses with UV protection (UV 400 or higher).

2. Ensure your prescription lenses are on photochromic/anti-reflex coating.

3. Wear a hat with a wide brim to shield eyes from direct sunlight

4. Avoid looking directly at the sun

5. Wear protective eyewear during outdoor activities.

6. Use UV-blocking window films or coatings on car windows

7. Limit outdoor activities during peak sun hours (10am-4pm)

Symptoms to watch for:

1. Blurred vision

2. Eye pain or discomfort

3. Redness or inflammation

4. Double vision

5. Flashes or floaters

Treatment:

1. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience severe eye pain or vision loss.

2. Rest and avoid further sun exposure.

3. Use artificial tears or lubricating drops to alleviate dryness.

4. Wear UV-blocking sunglasses, contact lenses or protective eyewear.

What is Myopia?

Myopia also referred to as short or near sighted is an eye condition that can compromise vision and in rare cases cause complications that can lead to blindness .

Globally, the incidence of myopia is on the increase and is set to become the leading cause of permanent blindness by 2050.

Is it curable ?

While myopia cannot be cured, it can be managed. Good vision can be achieved with accurate glasses and myopia progression can be halted with therapy and special lenses.

Is Myopia preventable

Unfortunately, family history, excessive near work and limited outdoor time play a key role in the onset of myopia.

Early detection and intervention is key to effective management of myopia in children as it increases the risk of developing eye diseases such as glaucoma and cataract.

Complications from high myopia include retinal detachment and myopic degenerations are uncorrected with spectacles and may cause permanent visual impairment.
