I was 10 years old when I visited a close relation who was admitted in the hospital. This was at a time when my parents were still struggling and had no money to fund large expenses. She had fallen very sick. A prolonged illness that kept her hospitalized for months.
During that time, my mother pleaded with my headmaster, who was from her place, to extend the payment for my fees and money for my common entrance, so that she would be able to pay the hospital bill of this relation. Just so you know Victor Firdance wasn't born with a silver spoon.
I was standing outside while listening to her cry and beg. And when she had come out, her eyes were as red as pepper. She looked like someone who was beaten by the man in his office. I felt pity for her to the extent I nearly joined her to cry.
The headmaster rubbed my head and asked me to run to class. He said he had settled with my mother. That day my mother returned home and was silent.
It was the next day she took me to this relation of ours to greet her. The money for my fees and the common entrance was used to settle her hospital bills and prepare her for surgery.
Just two days after the successful surgery, we received the news that the relation diéd in the middle of the night. It was a painful death that struck my family.
As my days for common entrance approached, I noticed I was no longer sent home for fees or my common entrance levy.
So I asked my mother one evening.
"Mummy, did you pay?"
She said no. She didn't.
She told me she was saving up but the money was not forthcoming.
I ended up writing the common entrance examination. My mother and I knew I wasn't supposed to be writing it.
She took me to the headmaster who confirmed that he was the one who paid for the common entrance for me. And was led to give me a two year scholarship from my JSS1-JSS2.
My mother broke down in tears and thanked him.
He lifted her and said to her.
"Madam, I just want you to rest for two years. Just rest."
That day I swore with my life that when I become wealthy I will build a house for MR Banjo. The Principal who helped me.

Three years ago, I began my search for him. I eventually found his house after asking questions and making a few calls.
Only to be told that Mr. Banjo had died in an accident that claimed his life. Mr. Banjo was now a retired Principal. But had people he still sponsored to school with his pension.
As a way to show my gratitude, I decided to sponsor two out of those kids.
Tomorrow makes it 4 years since Mr. Banjo diéd. And I want to use this opportunity to remember him.
Thank you sir for the foundation you laid for me.
Your boy is doing well now.
Continue resting in peace.
