EDO STATE INAUGURATES MEASLES-RUBELLA TECHNICAL WORKING GROUP, TASKS MEMBERS ON DILIGENCE
By Edokpayi Adesuwa
As part of efforts to strengthen the fight against vaccine-preventable diseases, improve child health in the state, and ensure commitment to quality and effective healthcare service delivery, the Edo State Government, through the Office of the First Lady, has inaugurated the Measles-Rubella (MR) Technical Working Group (TWG). This comes ahead of the January 2026 rollout of the MR vaccine, with the group tasked to create awareness and promote the upcoming vaccination campaign.
During the inauguration at the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) in Benin City, the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Anani, emphasized the importance of public understanding, acceptance, and uptake of the vaccine. She urged the team to ensure widespread sensitization and mobilization, noting that the MR vaccine offers dual protection against measles and rubella, thereby safeguarding children and mothers from serious complications.
Mrs. Anani explained that while measles is widely recognized for its high transmission rate and potential complications, rubella often receives less attention despite its severe effects on pregnant women and unborn babies, including congenital rubella syndrome, which can cause deafness, heart abnormalities, and developmental challenges. She described the introduction of the MR vaccine into the state’s routine immunization schedule as a significant public health milestone.
She also reiterated Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes, particularly for vulnerable populations. According to her, the government has placed maternal and child health at the core of its development agenda by investing in stronger health systems, expanding access to care, and improving health indicators across the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomole, stressed the need for proper public sensitization due to potential misconceptions and conspiracy theories surrounding vaccines. He explained that the TWG was formed to educate the public, address concerns, and dispel misinformation. He noted that preventing future outbreaks is critical, especially as the state is currently battling diseases such as diphtheria, dengue fever, Lassa fever, and yellow fever. Preparations for the January 2026 rollout include equipping healthcare facilities and providing training for health workers.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Coulson Osoikhai, said the MR vaccine would significantly improve child survival and maternal health. He added that the state government has made major investments in primary healthcare, expanded access to essential services, and improved immunization coverage.
The highlight of the event was the official inauguration of the TWG by Mrs. Anani, who administered the oath of service. Members pledged to carry out their duties with diligence, dedication, effectiveness, and efficiency.
