Edo State Confirms Dengue Fever Outbreak, Steps Up Disease Response Efforts

‎The Edo State Ministry of Health has confirmed an outbreak of Dengue Fever with 86 reported cases across several Local Government Areas. This was made known by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, during a press briefing held in Benin City.

‎Present at the briefing were representatives of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the State Disease Surveillance Team, Ministry of Health Directors, the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), and other key stakeholders.

‎Dengue Fever is caused by a virus transmitted through the bite of Aedes mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti. The disease spreads quickly, especially in areas with poor sanitation and stagnant water, which provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

‎To prevent the spread, residents are advised to keep their surroundings clean, cover water containers, use mosquito nets, apply insect repellents, and destroy mosquito breeding sites. Healthcare workers across the State have been advised to be on high alert and to report any suspected cases promptly.

‎Apart from Dengue Fever, the Health Commissioner also gave updates on other disease situations in the State. Lassa Fever has recorded 137 confirmed cases with 24 deaths, Yellow Fever has 2 confirmed cases with 1 death, Monkeypox (Mpox) has 8 confirmed cases with no deaths, and Diphtheria has 8 confirmed cases with 3 deaths.

‎To tackle the situation, Director Public Health, Dr. Stephenson Ojiefoh has been appointed as the Incident Manager to lead the response. The Emergency Operation Center has also been activated, and the Ministry is rolling out a statewide response plan. This includes surveillance, case management, vector control and environmental sanitation across all affected areas.

‎The Health Commissioner further assured that the current administration under Governor Monday Okpebholo remains fully committed to protecting the health of residents and will continue working until all outbreaks are brought under control.

Earlier today, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, made an unscheduled stop to monitor the ongoing Oral Polio Vaccination (OPV) exercise across several communities in Edo State, as part of the National Immunization Days (NIDs).

This exercise, which is being conducted simultaneously across the country, aims to immunize all children under the age of five against poliomyelitis—a crippling and potentially deadly disease that remains a threat despite Nigeria's certification as wild polio-free in 2020.

During the visit, the Commissioner engaged with immunization teams, caregivers, and local leaders to assess the quality of implementation, ensure adherence to protocols, and encourage wider community participation. He emphasized the importance of not letting our guard down and reiterated that immunization remains one of the most cost-effective public health strategies for disease prevention.

The importance of the Oral Polio Vaccine cannot be overstated:

It is a safe, effective, and free vaccine that helps build lifelong immunity in children.

OPV helps prevent the reintroduction and spread of both wild and vaccine-derived polioviruses.

High vaccination coverage is essential to protect every child, especially in hard-to-reach and underserved communities.

The Commissioner also praised the efforts of frontline health workers, volunteers, traditional leaders, and development partners who continue to play critical roles in reaching every household.

He called on parents and guardians to make their children available for vaccination, noting that a single unvaccinated child could undermine years of progress and put entire communities at risk.

This monitoring effort reflects the state government's strong commitment to public health, disease prevention, and the well-being of every child in Edo State. The Commissioner reaffirmed the administration's vision to build a resilient health system where no child is left behind.

EDO STATE GOVERNMENT MOVES SWIFTLY TO CONTAIN DIPHTHERIA OUTBREAK

The Edo State Government wishes to inform the general public that it is fully aware of the recent outbreak of Diphtheria reported in certain parts of the State.

In response, the administration of His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo, has activated an emergency public health response, deploying all necessary resources and expertise to arrest the situation and safeguard the health of residents.

Governor Okpebholo, demonstrating decisive leadership, is personally coordinating surveillance and monitoring efforts, working closely with the State Ministry of Health and other critical stakeholders to ensure a swift and effective containment of the disease.

Key interventions currently underway include the procurement of life-saving vaccines to drive an immediate and statewide vaccination campaign targeting vulnerable populations, especially children. The government is also ramping up public awareness campaigns through multiple platforms—radio, television, community outreach, and social media—to educate citizens on the symptoms of diphtheria, preventive measures, and the importance of early treatment.

Hospitals across the State have been placed on high alert and instructed to intensify case detection, prompt isolation, and proper clinical management of suspected cases in accordance with national and international guidelines.

Medical personnel are being briefed and equipped to respond appropriately, while the State’s disease surveillance network is being expanded to trace and monitor potential contacts swiftly.

The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole has been at the forefront of the State’s medical response, working tirelessly with the emergency health task force to mitigate the spread of the disease and provide real-time updates to the public.

In an inclusive move, school owners and proprietors are actively collaborating with the Government to implement early warning systems, enforce hygiene standards, and carry out health screenings where necessary to protect schoolchildren—who are among the most vulnerable.

In addition, Governor Okpebholo has convened a multi-sectoral emergency meeting with representatives from the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), World Health Organization (WHO), traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and community development groups to harmonize efforts and strengthen the response framework.

The Government assures the public that there is no cause for panic. The situation is under control, and all necessary protocols are being enforced to prevent further spread. Edo State has a strong track record in managing public health emergencies, and this instance is no exception.

Governor Okpebholo urges citizens to remain calm but vigilant. Residents are advised to report any symptoms such as sore throat, fever, swollen glands in the neck, or difficulty in breathing to the nearest healthcare facility.

The Government also encourages all residents to cooperate with health officials and participate fully in the vaccination and awareness drive.

Edo State remains committed to the health and well-being of its people and will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that this outbreak is swiftly and permanently addressed.
