There has been a report of an outbreak of meningitis in the Democratic Republic of Congo. in the north-eastern Tshopo Province where 261 suspected cases and 129 deaths—a high case fatality ratio of 50%—have been reported.

“Meningitis is a severe infection and an important civil health challenge. We are moving fast, providing medicines, and deploying specialists to assist the government’s efforts to bring the outbreak under control in the quickest way,” said Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.

Meningitis is an inflammation (swelling) of the shielding layers covering the brain and spinal cord.

Over 100 patients are acquiring medications at home and in health centers in Banalia. Meningitis is transferred among people through droppings of respiratory or throat fluids from infected people. Close and prolonged contact or living in close neighborhoods with an infected person encourages the stretch of the infection. People of all ages can catch the disease. But, it largely involves babies, children, and young people.
