It’s here again!!!

World Glaucoma Week is observed in the second full week of March and takes place yearly. It aims to create awareness about a medical condition that affects countless people around the world.

The observance aims to prioritize early detection and treatment as glaucoma remains one of the major causes of blindness all over the globe.

Glaucoma is a word that refers to a set of eye illnesses that are characterized by gradual and permanent optic nerve damage (the nerve in the eye that controls vision), and can lead to blindness if left untreated.

Glaucoma is believed to be the cause of blindness in 4.5 million individuals, according to the WHO.

Although little is known about glaucoma prevention, early detection and treatment is the ideal method to avoid glaucoma-related blindness.

World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness held on the second Thursday of October, to focus global attention on vision impairment, including blindness. This year, World Sight Day will take place on October 14, 2021 with the theme: Love Your Eyes.

Globally, at least 1 billion people have near or distance vision impairment that could be prevented or has yet to be addressed. Vision impairment affects people of all ages, with the majority being over the age of 50. Vision impairment and blindness can have major and long-lasting effects on all aspects of life, including daily personal activities, interacting with the community, school and work opportunities and the ability to access public services.

Unoperated cataract and uncorrected refractive error are the leading causes of vision impairment. Other causes such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, infectious diseases of the eye, and trauma, however, cannot be ignored and need to be addressed.

Recently at the 74th World Health Assembly, Member States adopted two new global targets for eye care by 2030 ̶ a 40 per cent increase in effective coverage of refractive errors and a 30 per cent increase in effective coverage of cataract surgery. These targets will play a key role in not only increasing global eye care coverage in the future but also in delivering quality services.

MAINTAINING YOUR EYE HEALTH

Here are some daily routines that can go a long way to keeping your eyes safe!

.
The hands are exposed to a lot of dirt, dust and bacteria, and all of these can be easily transferred to your peepers(eyes) each time you touch or rub them.

So avoid putting your hands to your eyes to prevent infection and irritation. If the habit is so ingrained on you, make an effort to get rid of it as soon as possible.

.
Wash your hands regularly to keep bacteria at bay and prevent them from getting in contact with your eyes, eyeglasses, and contact lenses.

.
Exposure to sunlight and UV rays increases your risk for age-related macular degeneration and may cause cornea sunburn or photo keratitis.

So aside from making a fashion statement and adding “oomph” to your overall look, put on those sunglasses to protect your eyes. UV-protected eyeglasses or contact lenses will also do. Putting on caps, visors and hats are also advisable.

.
Sufficient fluid intake is essential to your body’s overall wellbeing, including the eyes. If you’re hydrated enough, you prevent your eyes from getting dry and irritated.
