WASTE NOT - What to do with used plastic (PET) Bottles.

Used plastic PET bottles liter the environment in most of our cities blocking drainage and causing flooding. As a non biodegradable material PET bottle does not replenish the soil and contributes to soil erosion leading to loss of agricultural production.

PET can be recycled and reused. Hence,
there are many uses including
1. Use as containers for water treatment using solar energy. This is called solar disinfection
2 Use to create beautiful art works such jewelry with huge economic value
3. Use to create cooling system like air conditioners in very hot environment.

The PET bottle has a lot more uses. Scavengers make money by picking them and selling to waste recycling companies who make local use or export them. Support should be given to small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) and social businesses of NGOs to create jobs and clean up the environment

Press Statement

Call to Habitual Hand Hygiene Practice in Nigeria

As the world celebrates the Global Hand Washing Day 2016 on 15th October, SWAPHEP calls on government and stakeholders in the relevant sectors to take steps to centralize hand hygiene in development agenda

Government at all levels should formulate policies and increase investment in hand hygiene

The theme of the Global Hand washing Day 2016 is "make hand washing a habit"

As habit formation is difficult, we call on parents, teachers, NGOs, the media, healthcare professioners and development partners to intensify sensitization efforts towards attitudinal change from dirty habits to regular hand washing with soap after using the toilet, before touching food and after cleaning babies

We urge schools, other public places and households to make hand washing with soap a habit.

Kindly share

Signed
Hope Eghe Ogbeide
Director, SWAPHEP
