Did you know there are 4 different types of ageing?

Let's break them down:

❇️ Chronological Ageing

This is your calendar - the number of years you've been alive.
🕒 You can't control this, but it's only one piece of the puzzle!

❇️ Biological Ageing

How old your body feels and functions.
💪🏼 You can be 50 but have the body of a 35-year-old - if you eat well, move more, and stress less!

❇️ Psychological Ageing

This is how old you feel in your mind.
🧠 Some people stay mentally young, curious, and joyful even in their 70s!

❇️ Social Ageing

This shapes society's expectations - like when you "should" retire, marry, act a certain way or become a community leader🤩!
🤔 But guess what? You don't have to fit into anyone's age box.

🧓👣 Why Elderly People Have Thick Nails?

It's not just age - here's what's happening!

👉As we grow older, our body goes through changes - and yes, even our nails are part of the story!
Let's break down why nails (especially toenails) tend to get thicker with age

🔹 Slower Nail Growth

Ageing reduces how fast nails grow.

🔹Thickening

This slower growth allows for debris and keratin ( dead cells) to accumulate leading to thicker nails.

🔹 Reduced Blood Circulation

Less blood flow = Less nutrients reaching your nails, causing them to become dry, hard, and thick.

🔹 Micro Injuries from Shoes

The right shoes or pressure from walking can cause subtle trauma, thickening the nail as it tries to protect itself.

🔹 Fungal Infection

Older adults are more prone to fungal nail infection ( onychomycosis) due to weaker immune systems or chronic conditions. These can result in nails becoming thicker, discoloured or more brittle.

🔹 Underlying Health Condition

Conditions like:
• Diabetes
• Peripheral artery disease
• Skin conditions like psoriasis can also play a role.

✅ What can you do?

💧Soak nails before trimming

🥿 Wear comfortable shoes

🦶 Keep nails clean and moisturised

🧑‍⚕️ See a foot doctor if the nails look abnormal.

🌿 Healthy ageing includes healthy nails. Don't ignore nail changes - your body might be telling you something.
